Welcome to IWETHEY!

New So we went on this little trip to Oregon this weekend...
...and before we left, I popped the hood on my wife's car, and checked the dipstick, which was drier than the Sahara. Asked her how often she checked the oil level.

The answer?

"Never!" (Admittedly, given with a totally sheepish grin)

Engine has a 4 quart recommended capacity, it took 2 to get sign on the dipstick, and 1 more to actually get it somewhere in the middle. I'm just glad the car is okay.

New So, what is that oil "idiot light" for? :)

The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell
New Never went off.
IME, that light only goes off when the drain plug comes out and you're running dry.

New Pressure only on (most older) cars
As long as there is enough oil in the sump to keep the pump busy, it will not come on.
New Yep, had that experience
My car ran dry one day, and I never even noticed. In my slight defense, I was in the throes of my chemical depression, and truly not noticing anything that year a lot, but at any rate, my oil drained completely out, light never came on up until the last bit was out, I suppose, and then it threw a nice rod through my engine.

This was in 1995, I believe, and a friend rebuilt an engine and put it in for about $1500.00, but man, I never went without checking the oil regularly after that, no matter what state of mind I was in.

I'd recommend she check it once a week or every other week, depending on usage, and if she doesn't know how, either show her, or check it for her.

My ex-fiance was so dumb, he never bothered to check his oil ever. I checked it for him regularly, up until the point he left me. A week after we were apart, his car ran out of oil and it destroyed his engine also.

So my advice is, if you love your car, check your oil.

New add to Thane's weekly honeydo list.
She might not have known how, or how often to check it.

New Oh, she did...
...just somehow got the idea that with "new cars" this wasn't necessary.

This has been remedied.
