There's another problem with it being gratis.
And that's the IE-Netscape problem all over again: i.e. dump a product for less than it costs them. And we all know Microsoft would probably consider it, too.

It's a bit different from my view.
In the case of IE v.s. Netscape, that was not an "essential" tool to operations. The problem here is that unscrupulous individuals have run away with the "spyware" meme to the point where it is crippling people's computers. I'm making a fair chunk of change off of this ($80-$200 per PC, including Firefox installation, depending on time, if the person is a friend, onsite or delivered, and degree of infection) and each PC is crippled to the point of uselessness before I get to it.
This is not something that a third-party app should be needed to fix - this is IMO something that should be a core OS feature.

This will be my christmas present to all this year
A CD with all the little things that make life sweet. Firefox, thunderbird, simple written instructions and all the tools to get the system clean in the first place.
I've added AdAware, Spybot and CWShredder to the essential list of cleaners so far. Any additions? And any advice on a solid, free anti-virus utility?
Zone Alarm and urgings to get a router/firewall (Model?) will be included also.

There's a specific section on AV software.

The difference is
being "good enough" is not enough here. Spyware is not HTML/HTTP - these are actual people bent on beating anti-spyware tools, not some academics releasing updated protocol specs once evry few years.

Q. I think I need to see a specialist, but my doctor insists he can handle my problem. Can a general practitioner really perform a heart transplant right in his/her office? A. Hard to say, but considering that all you're risking is the $20 co-payment, there's no harm in giving it a shot.

"Good Enough", will be "Good Enough"...
Every tool I have ever thought to be useful, that was either purchased by or licensed to with features removed and included in the OS Product of thiers, has become a terrible waste of electrons.
The feature will be touted by every M$ SHILL from here to eternity. I really hope, they make a GREAT Tool out of this third rate software that GIANT makes.
Personally, I can see it now, M$'s product will remove the other anti-spyware software as spyware. Then, will go on to lackluster in ability. This is something that sometimes needs to be updated multiple times daily, as well as Anti-virus/worm/macro software can be.
I don't agree with this, this just cut out a major portion of the people who really know howto make these things work. I'll bet you that over 90% of the competing product fall into obscurity and wither away, thereby showing "Good Enough" is "Good Enough"

This is true.
I work for a maker of spyware removal software: [link|http://www.guideworks.com/|http://www.guideworks.com/] So I know it has to be Good, not just Good Enough.
Fortunately, there's a precedent: anyone remember MSAV? Microsoft licensed a version of Central Point Anti-Virus and bundled it with MS-DOS 6. It was awful. People were widely advised to avoid it. Note that Windows 95 never had any anti-virus software... This is much the same deal: if it's not industry-leading from day one, it will sink.
