New Intel Centrino Mobile Technology
I am thinking about buying a new laptop. Intel has the new Centrino technology that I've read a bit about. Everything I read is very positive but doesn't provide processor speed information.

Does anyone know the positives and negatives about this technology and how it stacks up to speed of a Pentium 4?

Thanks

Al Vitale
New P4 = teh suxx0r
The Pentium 4 was a "marketing" processor - intentionally crippled so they could crank the clock speeds up high. In all actuality, on a GHz to GHz basis, the P3 actually outperformed the P4. A P4 1.5GHz was about speed eqivalent to a P3 1GHz processor.

Why does this matter?

Well, Intel took the P3, slapped in some minor upgrades, screwed around with some low-power functionality, and slapped the Centrino label on it. I'm running a Centrino @ 1.6GHz that beats the pants off of a 2.4GHz laptop sitting next to it.

New Oversimple.
The P4M is roxxor.

Woah. Just discovered that Konqueror's text widget has a built in spell checker. (I'm trying MEPIS out, and liking what I see so far).

New Good and bad.
The main selling points are that the processor is based on the Pentium III so it's generally less power-hungry than the P4 or P4M, and the wireless stuff. You can't compare the Centrinos and P4s by clock speed as they're different architectures.

I've got an IBM T41 laptop with a 1.7 GHz PentiumM. It's subjectively quite speedy, but the great thing about it is with a high-capacity battery and replacing the CD drive with another battery I can get ~ 8 hours of runtime with it (when the power saving options are adjusted properly and wireless isn't used).

I'm very happy with mine and wouldn't consider a P4-based laptop unless it was going to be a desktop replacement. The battery life is just too short for my needs.

Oh, and the bad? Well you're paying for Intel's cheesy ads when you get a Centrino. :-/

HTH.

Cheers,
Scott.
