Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I can't tell yet whether
The patently anti-Constitutional Ashcroft Abominations have been swallowed so abjectly because:

1) Dumbth, attention-span disease and overall ignorance of that Constitution - are now so rampant that, the nature of these Reichstag-burning proclamations are just not generally perceived (or much noticed except by the few).

(After all, not many years ago: asking people to sign a petition - excerpted verbatim from the Constitution - was frequently countered with such phrases as, sounds Commyunist to me! And no, this is not an Urban Legend\ufffd. I *Saw* this occur. Now of course the epithet would be, umm Librul ?)

Plus de choses changent, plus qu'ils restent les m\ufffdmes.

2) Easy Rider Syndrome. When people experience the unKnown, they become afraid. When they're afraid - they become dangerous. (Mobs of the fearfuly rampant - well, that's what we studied in all those history courses. Didn't we all?)

Which is the scarier? Both would be scarier than Either. (And if our ovine consumer paradise has produced a nation of Wimps, in its first At-Home test ever?) - after the hysteria reduces with familiarity, could such a band of sheep next discover the idea of shame ?

I am inured to lots of the events since '68 when Nixon! made it to President. Thus I expected little. But the Ashcroft-Oil Doctrine - swallowed hook, line and sinker ???

That's not 'little' - that is craven cowardice, Nation-wide, Big as a barn. Who would fight to preserve *That* Nation, to .. come home to ?

Let Us Prey.
Or Spray?

New The scarier.
Both.

The lack of teaching of 1) Proper civics, including comprehensive study of the Constitution, and 2) Basic Logic and Critical Thinking skills to our youngins should point to the cause of your 1). Most kids coming out of our high schools think double jeopardy is a game show and a red herring is a smelly fish.

Someone pointed out elsewhere that the reason we have a Representative Republic form of government in this country is avoid the precise dangers you describe in your 2). I recall reading (perhaps the Federalist Papers?) that Constitutional requirements for those serving in Congress was to make sure that intelligent, reasoned, and educated persons were running the government. One look at politics is probably enough for most intelligent, reasoned, and educated persons to choose alternate career paths.
