Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I still love PageMaker
I haven't used it since 5.0, and only used Quark briefly. But seven years later there are still things I wish I could do.

One thing for her/you to consider is the difference between a DTP app and a word processing app. To something like Word or WordPerfect, each file is a single document. You may have graphics and text boxes, but it's all part of the same doc. If you add text to a paragraph it reflows everything after.

With a real DTP app every item is a separate document. You can delete/resize/move any item without affecting any other item, and you can have one document span multiple text areas. The "document" you're working with is a set of pages, and you place items on those pages.

If you've never worked with one yourself, supporting her will require using it some yourself. Your assumptions about how a word processor work won't be relevant.

New Still have PageMaker v5
Before Adobe decided to buy aldus and make improvements.

I hate Pagemaker for all the tweaks they put in.

By far the best version I ever used and still use is version 5.

It was NEW when Windows for WorkGroups was Brand New. I still say that you cannot do a better layout interface. They just had it right.

Then Adobe stepped in and improved it.

Sure, current Pagemaker is great, but I still prefer the spartan interface Aldus just made work and work well. You'd just have to see it.

Scribus is about as close to that as I have found, but it works a bit differently... very nice though, installs on Debian just fine from the archive.

Quark Express is another of those programs where "Earlier Versions were better". Although I do have to say I'd much rather use Quark Express the Page Maker right now.

In the end, they mostly all do a fine job. Heck, I like LyX myself for many things and it just works.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New They definitely steepened the learning curve
Professionals doing creative marketing or magazine layout use everything it's got to offer. Most people, include me when I was laying out newspapers, need the same 8 tools for 99% of what they do. I think trying to make the PageMaker interface look as much like PhotoShop as possible was a mistake. They're different tools for different purposes.
