I need to run ASP web scripts on Linux. These are
old, using minimal features of ASP. I can't kill
them totally since I depend on a Web monkey for
certain ongoing pages.
In order to do that, I need to run ChiliSoft.
In order to run ChiliSoft, I need RH 7.3.
Blech.
In order to run 7.3, for my initial test/devel,
on my laptop, I've installed a RH 7.3 instance
in VMWare under windows XP-Pro. Which might
just work. After all, I need IE when testing
against the "Web Server", so all in one box
on my lap is helpful.
Note: I also have a Suse 9.1 Pro on a partition
of the laptop (dual boot), and I have WinXP installed
in a VMWare paritition on that. But native Win
video is SO much better, I won't even consider using the
native Linux at this point.
As I install the "machine", it is interesting.
I have the 3 ISOs on disk. So when it asks me
to insert a new disk, I just assign the next file.
I figure for development I'll take several system
snapshots (file copies!). I need to install a
vanilla 7.3 system. Snap! Then I need to intall the
ChiliSoft. Snap! Then I need to install the particular
PostGres they claim to work with. Snap!
This way I'll have a quick rollback when I screw up
the next step.
When I actually go to install a REAL RH 7.3 Web
server, what gotchas do I need to look-out for?
Any security issues associated with this particular
software? I don't see any recent vulns but that may be
just because it is not as heavily used as it once
was. After all, Sun only supports it running 7.3
or on their own OS.
