New Uncle Walter said it was FDR...
in an "essay" on [link|http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4139094|All Things Considered] last night. FDR tried to punish the southern democrats for not following his lead. He wasn't able to force his slate in. It culminated in the 1964 election when Goldwater took much of the south, but lost. Nixon then cleaned up.
