The Democratic Party has proved once again . .
. . that going up against a bad candidate without a viable candidate at all is unlikely to win an election, that going up against a bad but coherent message with an incoherent message is unlikely to win an election, and going up with both a non-viable candidate and an incoherent message is a certain loss.
They lost to W, they lost to Arnold, they lost to W again and they lost plenty more.
The Democratic Party is now useful only to the facists as something to point to when they say "see, we have democracy". I doubt they can find candidates of sufficient quality to mount a credible presidential bid again, because who'd want to run as a Democrat? A loser?
The two party system is over.

Well, look to Illinois
Where the Banana Republicans have self-destructed to an extent that Terry McAuliffe could only dream about. If the Dems are smart, they'll watch the rebuilding of the BR party in Illinois, and follow that path in lockstep with their national party.

8 years ago I wouldn't have named George Bush
Anyone else in his mode I wouldn't name today either - because they aren't runnable with voters like me.
As you may have noticed, there are enough voters who aren't like me that they are runnable...

Hillary will never run for pres
She saw the boos when she spoke after 9-11. She's anything but stupid. If she ran it would guarantee the most rabid of the right wing would come out in force. Much too polarizing. Now if you want a truly possible nominee, I submit Richard Durbin. Not well known on the national stage but neither was Bill Clinton.

Sad thing is
The sad things is, the way politics and campaigns are in the US now, being an unknown is an advantage. If you have any real history at all, it will be picked up and picked over to death.
Only someone that hasn't done much could have as consistant and boring a history as is needed to seem electable now.

Even sadder
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the DNC decides to run her anyway.

And the winner is.....
LBJ => Veep Nixon => Veep Ford => Veep Carter => Governor Reagan => Governor Bush => Veep Clinton => Governor Bush II => Governor
The pattern here is pretty obvious. Don't nominate someone who's serving in the Senate or House of Representatives. They are considered tainted goods due to their voting record. This means that Hillary won't do. Go find some Governor who's never had to vote on a national issue. Heck, if it weren't for the 22nd amendment, Arnold would be a shoe-in for the Repubs.
The Dems are going to have to find some Governor from the midwest. Or they'll have to have Gore run again.

Has nothing to do with the 22nd Amendment
Try Article II Section 1 Clause 5: No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. The 22nd amendment says Duh cannot run again. [Edit: typos]

The two-party system is self-healing.
This has happened before lots of times in American history. It always sorts itself out and we have two major parties again. Just not always the same two we started with.
The Democrats can recover from this. But they have to make a lot of changes. If they don't, they will be replaced by some other party.

d00d...where are you coming from?
My god...even I didn't declare the death of the Republican Party when Clinton was elected. (The 2nd time around, no less)
Yes, Democrats lost. But it was also a very tight race with the country split damn near 50/50.

No kidding...
When you almost get beaten by a liberal senator from Massachusetts, you can't exactly claim, "Mandate".
All the election showed is what happens when you put a bad incumbent against a bad candidate.

Unfortunately
This morning I heard an announcer on a conservative radio station actually throwing around the word "mandate" more than once. I'm afraid that there will be a lot of people who have the same sentiments in the Repo party.

That's the word of the day.
I've heard it quite a few times around here.
Me: Mandate. *larf*
Them: But, this is the highest number of people who have ever voted for a President!
Me: Not percentage wise, it isn't.
Them: But, he won over 50% of the vote! First time since 1988!
Me: Uh, all that reflects is the fact that no one was willing to vote for a 3rd party candidate. There weren't any Naders or Perots that could siphon off enough votes to drop everyone below 50%.
Them: It's still a mandate!
Me: Dude, he barely beat a liberal senator from Massachusetts, and half the country can't stand him.
Them: 4 more years! 4 more years!
*sigh*
