New Reasonably good CG graphics
A bit of parodying the James Bond franchise - a secret lab you get to from a church confessional, where a monk is creating weapons for The Hero to use in his fight against evil creatures. Some of the plotline goes over the top. The extras in the DVD are good, for the most part. My son liked it a lot; in fact, he even laughed a few times even though the movie wasn't supposed to have any humor in it.

New Bad CG
Not so much that they were rendered poorly, but this movie is the one that finally put me off of the action/effects blockbuster genre.

Basically, any move that show signs that it will feature beasties extremely unrealistically leaping from wall to ceiling to whatever to other wall as they approach the camera gets an automatic thumbs down. It's a tired cliche of such effects-laden movies (that and the obligatory massive swarm of whatevers shot), and a sign that there won't be much else orginal in the movie.

Now that I think of it, I haven't even been to the movies since I saw that one.

New Watching Raiders of the Lost Ark the other day...
Remember the scene where the Nazis first get the Ark and are going to load it onto a plane? And Indy manages to blow it up? My PFY said, "if they did that movie now, a CGI gear or bolt or something would come flying past the camera."

Too true about the cliches, in other words.
New Re: Bad CG
Let's lump in all the stupid CG hallucinations about cars, screwing, and the stock market while we're at it.

On the other side of things, I just saw John Carpenter's "The Thing" again, with the astonishing live action SFX by Rob Bottin. It cost him his health, but the result is still mind-boggling, and pushes the flick into the top 5 ever sci-fi flicks.

New Agreed. But other than that I enjoyed it.
I saw the DVD over the weekend. The physics of the jumping and crashing was all wrong and not believable. I liked that it wasn't excessively gory and the story was fairly interesting.

Based on the TV ads, I never would have considered seeing it. It looked like another stupid gory horror flick based on what I recall of the TV ads.

I now understand Peter's [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=180828|comment] about [link|http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000295/|Ms. Beckinsale]. :-) (...) Interesting - she was in "Cold Comfort Farm", another film I really enjoyed. Any impression she'd previously left with me wasn't associated with her name. She's not a great actress, but she did a decent job in VH.

Cheers,
Scott.
