New In 1970 oil from Ak North Slope to end 2001
do we have a problem? You bet, is there still oil to get you bet. Until extraction refining and delivery exceeds alternatives we will use oil. The oil companies are not stupid, they realize this and at least BP is actively persuing alternatives.

New Not that much
The big oil companies are just researching other things enough to cover their rears, soaking up government research money and channeling research into tightly controled patents along the way.

Take Bush's energy policy, which put more research into hydrogen then any president in the past. But did so only the context of getting hydrogen by cracking conventional oil. Thus funneling the money back to the big companies and negating most of the possible benefit.
