Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I NEED
the most stable Samba as the one and only domain controller and a hefty piece of file storage.
And a general Linux environment for me to code text utilities and have a Postgres DB.

The SATA is via Adaptec AACRAID crontoller, so the OS thinks it is SCSI.

So, do I get the latest knoppix and start from there?

Or DL the evil text based installer and have another heart attack as it asks me about drivers and I have no idea what it is talking about.

New Gah - don't use Knoppix.
If you're going the livecd iinstall to hdd, try [link|http://www.mepis.org/|Simply Mepis].

New Wow. This is sah-weet
Fully configured debian distro straight off the cd. Onto this Dell Cpi I have to correct 2 issues (standard issues) which are soundcard and wireless. Everything else works perfectly (actually better than had I had to make all these choices myself)

Thanks bud...this is way less painful than net install. Even better than Mandrake install, which was my previous vote for braindead simple Linux installs.

New No problem!
I'm curious - which version did you end up using?

New 2004.04
Downloaded and burned. Couldn't take advantage of your offer for some reason.

No biggie. Didn't recognize sound and wireless card. Working through those after I get it updated.

First apt-get was the update. Next was aptitude. Next will be xfce. Then I fix the rest.

KDE is ok..but too much for this old thing to deal with.

New Odd -
I settled on Mepis because of the sound-card support/detection! *chuckle*

Oh well - glad it's useful!

New Nothing has ever worked first pass
No issue really. I've done this a couple times to this lapper before. Just a matter of getting a round tuit.

New Which installer did you use last?
Use the newDebian Installer for Sarge.

[link|http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sid_d-i/i386/current/sarge-i386-netinst.iso|Current Daily Build of D-I] that should get you Debian's Sarge, which fairly soon will also be Debian's "Stable".

It shouldn't ask you about Drivers, as it should auto-detect them.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
