I've been burned by unexpected croaking of "cut" before in an important cron job, so I weaned myself from it. My way. Use the right tool. cut is for selecting columns in exactly, consistently formatted data. It's not a field selection tool.

Now see, I ALSO understand your reasoning behind thinking and you mine.

Each are valid reason to use or not use cut (or anything else)

If you would include some of the reasoning behind your feeling and comments things would go MUCH MUCH better.
