Hey Box: EMC question
I'm testing various LUN configurations.
EMC has MetaLUNs, which means they create a new one by RAID0 striping or concatting already created LUNs. This is for size and performance reasons.
Except the performance tanks when I use them.
2 LUNs that would get 250MB per second writes tanks to 36MB per second when I stripe them.
Please check with your EMC person if he ever did this, and ever made it work without this type of performance drop.

concatenate = make a chain with - redundant
Analogy
forma = a shape
formulate = give a shape to
conformulate = not a word
conform = a different word, "to shape to"
If you wanted to use "concatenate", it should mean something like "to tie up with a chain". This horrible word is a neologism of illiterate computer "science".

Makes perfect sense.
Create a new LUN by tying together 2 LUNS. When one ends, intersperse some logic that causes the next one to be accessed as if it was part of the first, ie: chain it together.
Each base LUN acts as links on a chain.

I'm sorry, this word is just horrible - as a verb it sounds horrible, the usage is horrible, it's just wrong.
There is a reasonable use of the word in medical jargon, where it's an adjective meaning "in a chain".
join, conjoined
federate, confederated
catenate, concatenated
Get it now?

It's a 'sequence of your 'servative values, I'll bet. 'Sidering your taste in 'suming certain materials that have bad 'sequences for your health, I think it's understandable. You're a 'sumate poster here, at times, but in this case there's little doubt that you're 'fused.

har, but notice the words you hacked:
consequens - reall "com", an intensive prefix, and "sequens" so "to follow closely" or "to follow directly"
conservare - really "com" and "servare", the latter meaning "to preserve" - so "to preserve intensely"
consumare - really "com" and "sumere", "to take", so "to take completely"
confusum - a morphing of "confundere", meaning "mixed together", so this is actually a self-standing word.
In this sense "concatenate" might be thought to mean "totally bound up" - in any case it's a participle of "catenate". The actual act of chaining is "catenation".

ya gotta remember
that a LUN (Logical Unit} is a logical description of a space on a harddrive. Lat time I used them it was 4 LUNs to a spindle, so tying 4 luns into a Raid means you are writing to a stripe that consists of 4 write operations on a single spindle as opposed to 1 write. Thus takes 3.5 times longer.

Oh ye of little space
I've already got the info I need from the Clariion Best Practices.
In my case, it is: "You EXPECTED what?!?!
Well, not exactly, but there are many caveats and setup dependancies that makes it seem next to impossibly to get better striped performance using MetaLUNS. Seems more like a sales pitch check-off than a real thing I would use.
As far as spindles, no way. In this particular case of have 5 disk reaid sets. Each of the raid sets provide a single LUN. I then want to stripe across ALL of the in a single MetaLUNs. So I should be striping across 20 disks by the time I'm done.
