Amount of time spend keeping them that way... less time per week than in took to make this post. That is the difference. There were updates that I would want to make to RH and/or Mandrake that I would just quit on because I didn't fell like finding package foolib10 that happened to be a dependency for the latest instant messenger update. Its either apt-get blah blah blah or rpm blah blah blah. apt-get blah blah blah works better. I've tried both. The fact that Suse and RedHat have decided to put cds in pretty boxes and sell doesn't really much matter to me. I bought RedHat more than once because package management under rpm sucked enough to make upgrading painful. I don't have that problem anymore. Thats not politics. Thats a solution. In the end..success or failure in the marketplace will be based upon solving problems and ease of use. In the very end...success or failure in the marketplace for operating systems may very well be irrelevent...as the market is moving towards solutions based pricing.
