Homeland security can't say why Yusuf Islam was banned
[link|http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6099899/site/newsweek|MSNBC] Security officials can't quite explain why singer Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, was on a U.S. government "no fly" list. Homeland Security officials diverted his D.C.-bound jet to Bangor, Maine. Security experts in England said that Islam years ago helped set up an Islamic charity which campaigned to bar non-Muslims from Jerusalem; he also allegedly provided funds to the militant Palestinian group Hamas. In 1994, according to German police records, the singer met a German Islamic militant who later was mentor to 9/11 hijackers. But recently Yusuf Islam broke with Muslim militants, condemning extremism and pledging proceeds from a CD set to 9/11 families. Jewish leaders in Britain praise him as a moderate and say an Islamic school he set up in North London teaches a peaceful brand of Islam. "All indications are that his move away from extremism is entirely genuine, and he now concentrates on his school and his music," said Michael Whine, a spokesman for Britain's Jewish community.
U.S. security officials say that Islam's name for years has been on watch lists requiring that his U.S. visits be monitored. Records show that since 1999, he has visited the United States at least 19 times, most recently last May, when he traveled to Washington and met with top Bush administration officials, including U.S. foreign-aid chief Andrew Natsios; Jim Towey, chief of the White House office for "faith based" programs, and a Treasury official hunting terrorist financiers. What changed since May? Sources say the CIA issued a fresh intelligence report accusing Islam of recently meeting with extremists overseas\ufffdpossibly in Dubai, where he maintains a residence; on July 27, at the request of the "intelligence community," the Homeland Security Department put his name on a "no fly" list, which banned him from getting on any U.S.-bound flight. (He was allowed to board his flight to Washington by mistake.) But sources familiar with U.S. intelligence told NEWSWEEK most of the info on Islam is old and that the latest intel may be of little consequence. Islam is threatening legal action to clear his name, and issued a statement denouncing "all forms of terrorism and injustice; it is simply outrageous for the U.S. authorities to suggest otherwise." It appears that the banning of Yusuf was an over reaction by somebody, providing the US with yet another chance to piss off moderate Muslims. That his banning points out the many problems and flaws of the no-fly list is another issue. Jay

Another version of the story
[link|http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1541&ncid=1541&e=2&u=/afp/20040925/en_afp/us_attacks_air_britain_040925223243|Yahoo News] Time magazine, in its on-line edition, quoted aviation sources with access to the "no-fly" list as saying there is no entry on the list under the name "Yusuf Islam," but that there is a "Youssouf Islam" on the list. They said the incorrect name was added to the list this summer. It's not exactly clear if this story compliments or contradicts the other story. Jay

Buttle/Tuttle .. a fly made all the differnece.....
Bureaucracy and ductwork run amok in the story of a paperwork mixup that leads to the imprisonment of Mr. Buttle, shoe repairman, instead of Harry Tuttle, illegal freelance Heating Engineer. Bureaucrat Sam Lowry (prone to escapes to a fantasy world) gets branded a terrorist and becomes hunted by the state himself in the process of correcting the mistake.
From the movie "Brazil"...

Alas, we doomed . . .
. . to a Gestapo devoid of the fabled Teutonic order and efficiency. We are entering that vision of Hell where "the lovers are German, the mechanics are French, the cooks are English and the police are Italian". Heaven cannot help us now.

Dammit! Fat-fingered it again!
Brenda, you got nothing to worry about! This took a world-record three tries to get this silly LRPD into the correct forum!

Hehee! That makes me feel better
I almost have it figured out though. I did a couple tests, and I noticed that if I check the box to jump to, and then type the post, and then say in the middle of the post, I go back and check something in the thread by hitting back, when I return to the post and finish it, the check box is cleared. So apparently it resets itself somehow if you hit back and check things.

"The struggle for the emancipation of the working class is not between races or religions. It is one of class against class. Every trace of anti-Semitism, or any form of race hatred cannot assist the oppressed, it can on the contrary only aid the exploiters. Workers of all nationality, religion or creed must stand together against the common enemy: capitalism." -Ted Grant
