New Ah, 'Pigs in Space'
The whole police-in-aeroplanes thing was trialled here years ago, and quickly earned the 'Pigs In Space' monker. The trial must have started when The Muppet Show was still a popular prime-time thing.

The government have since moved on to the much more lucrative fixed speed cameras.

Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New Charity boxes
It is amazing how many people willingly offer money to the local authorities.
The revenue from speed cameras is entirely voluntary and considering how few people drive with due care it can only be assumed that those who get caught are looking for a way to be generous.
New Clarification, please
Are you saying that those caught chose to speed? Or that there is some little-known quirk of the law that says you don't have to pay the fine?

If (as I assume) you're saying that people are free to not speed, you must not have heard of the red light monitoring cameras. Studies by citizen groups have proved that when they go up, the length of the yellow goes down. And the ones that are for speeding are typically located on highways where the posted limit is significantly lower than local Department of Transportation studies have recommended.

You are, of course, free to lift your right foot OFF the accelerator :-)

New But that would be un-American!
We don't have to submit to silly rules like that. We are free, I tell you. FREE! Dead, but free.

Cheers,
Ben

New Un-Australian, too.

New Cynic.
You know there's a brewing kerfuffle about speed camera in school zones. There's one in Gymea which all the locals hate: during the so-called "school zone times" it checks for violations of the 40km/h limit. Trouble is, it's on President Avenue...

New There's a few on the highways as well
Those are tricky as I very rarely drive during the kids-wandering-about hours.

I've read a few reports of the camera being active even on 'pupil-free-days' - which strikes me as quite unfair. But it's mostly about the money, not much to do with safety.

That’s a great, great story. Therefore, it’s too good to be true.
