Want IE security upgrades?
Break out the credit card, then: [link|http://news.com.com/Microsoft+to+secure+IE+for+XP+only/2100-1032_3-5378366.html?tag=nefd.lede|http://news.com.com/...tml?tag=nefd.lede] Microsoft this week reiterated that it would keep the new version of Microsoft's IE Web browser available only as part of the recently released Windows XP operating system, Service Pack 2. The upgrade to XP from any previous Windows versions is $99 when ordered from Microsoft. Starting from scratch, the operating system costs $199. [...] By refusing to offer IE's security upgrades to users of older operating systems except through paid upgrades to XP, Microsoft may be turning the lemons of its browser's security reputation into the lemonade of a powerful upgrade selling point.

What a way...
to make your worst weakness, into your best strongpoint.
Wow, can I force people to look at my heavy GUT and pay to not HAVE to?
Come the fuck on. This is getting to be more wringing and less doing again.
Yet another reason to *HATE* the M$ BEA$T.

Hate? I love them.
They've just given me a reason *which I can put on the balance sheet* to switch to Firefox company-wide.
Good times.

FWIW
I think they're only talking about some of the new SP2 features like popup blocking and the different UI and defaults for ActiveX and binary downloads. Security related bugfixes that can be backported will still likely be released for supported OSen.

I think they'll be hearing from lawyers shortly.

I considered a real copy of XP.
Just to be legal on one of my PCs.
Unfortunately, full-priced copy is AU$600. About ten times too expensive, IMO. Of course, I could probably find it cheaper, but still - if I have to go looking for the discounted copies, it's still too expensive.

Aren't they all "real"?
i.e. how can you install it without "phoning home" to use jb's phrase?

There are corporate copies that don't.

Don't plug it into the network.
You'll still have to activate it over the phone, though.
Wade correctly points out that the corporate edition doesn't require activation. This is also true for corporate editions of other Microsoft software.

Yep.
Of course, I don't know what the margin is. [link|http://www.ht.com.au/Scripts/xworks.exe?CAT:SO6|http://www.ht.com.au...works.exe?CAT:SO6]
I will be visiting a computer fair tomorrow; I'll see if there's a much cheaper copy to be had somehow.
