New Bill Gates: "I invented open source"
I leave it to y'all to come up with appropriate commentary on this one.

[link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/22749.html|[link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/22749.html|http://www.theregis...4/22749.html]]
How to mangle the truth;

Have it reported by any major U.S. media outlet.
New He is sorta right.
He is sorta right, open source would not be the force it is without the huge cloud of evil floating over Redmond.

Jay
New Ha! :-)
New Bollocks
Software was distributed in source format long before compiled binaries were the norm. There's a reason every Unix shipped with a C compiler you know.

This practice predates PCs by some years.

Open Source (tm) merely tries to codify enforce the tradition of sharing and cooperation via legal means.

Perhaps more apocryphal - Open Source (tm) seeks to prevent what Bill did for his first BASIC interpreter - which was take a public domain implementation, clean it up a bit, and sell it as his own work.

IOW, Open Source has had Bill's personal number for some time.
New Re: Bollocks
Notice I didn't say that MS caused open source, rather it turned what was a small group of people into an major movement. A large percentage of the people using Linux at home today did not go with Linux because it's Unix or because it works better. They went to Linux because it's not MS, they went with Open Source because it is the opposite of the practices of MS.

The Open Source movement may have succeeded without MS, but MS certainly had a hand in driving people to it.

Jay
New Like everything else - they only popularized it.
Microsoft never invented anything in their lives.
New That is so Clintonesque.
Well, it is.

Sometimes "tolerance" is just a word for not dealing with things.
New But
Wouldn't "I invented Open Source" actually be Goresque?

Jay
New Which in turn would be: Russian!
Recall the cold war internal propaganda ~ invention of airplane before those uppity Wright-wing Muricans n'such..

You're exactly right.

BTW anyone know why Gateway stopped selling AMD-based boxes. Was it Micros~1-is pressure from Intel?
jb4
(Resistance is not futile...)
New Don't know, but I can guess.
Gateway's had lots of problems recently.

I don't think they sold as many Athlon boxes as they hoped.

They probably went to Intel and said, "Look we're having some troubles. Can you give us a break on pricing?" Intel probably said, "Sure, cheaper processors and more marketing money if you go with us exclusively." They then probably went to AMD and said, "Can you help us out?" And AMD probably wasn't able to counter.

I'm sure it hurt AMD some.

And on the Hammer and nail stuff....

Remember that AMD and Intel have lots of patent, etc., cross-licensing agreements. It wouldn't surprise me at all that if Hammer took off and seemed to be killing Itanic that Intel would work with AMD to license the relevant bits. Though Intel has deep pockets, they can't fight the market. If the market goes AMD in a big way, Intel will have to respond even if that means swallowing its pride on the Itanic.

Just some idle speculation on my part...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Wouldn't THAT be cool!

New What AMD Needs
Is for Dell to offer Athlon based boxes.

New It's a beautiful piece.
It's stories like this that make The Register such a wonderful piece of work.

If you haven't read the link yet, please do. It's very well done.

New Reminds me of the poor rummy on corner of Turk & Taylor
..preachin a description of "how it all is".. as seen through those rheumy eyes and n-bottles of Thunderbird: oblivious to the passers-by, all unable to comprehend a word of his explanatory er speech (even when respecting his personhood by - trying to listen).

Thunderbird / $Billion == same dope, I guess.. eats brain cells.

He coulda been a contender, gotten honest work and - fixed bugs in his [first theft] port of Basic. Instead - just another rummy :[

That’s a great, great story. Therefore, it’s too good to be true.
