APOD asks "What caused this ring of colors?"
[link|http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html|link]
The picture seems to be of the photographers shadow with the sun directly behind his head showing a circular rainbow with the focus on a construction site floor of concrete(?) with dirt/oil/floor cleaner(?) all over it. Perhaps a dust haze in air.
My guess is that it was caused by the steel-toed boot fairies of circular rainbows.

Photoshop.
;-j
He doesn't say whether it's real or something seen in the photograph. I assume it's real.
Rainbows like that are usually caused by light refracting through droplets of water or ice crystals. Hints can probably be found by looking at earlier [link|http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/|APODs] and [link|http://epod.usra.edu/|ESPODs]. We can say that something above him has a different refractive index than air. From the relative sizes of his shadow and the diameter of the circle, the refractive index can probably be determined.
Maybe he's got a crystal ball sitting on his head. >:-)
I'm not sure what's causing it in this case and don't have time to try to figure it out. ;-)
Cheers, Scott.

Re: APOD asks "What caused this ring of colors?"
The light and source of the rainbow are obviously behind him - hence the shadow. The shadow is sharp, so I would imagine the light source is small or going through a small hole. My guess is the pinhole is causing the refraction, and of course red light being lower frequency would be bent more and be on the outer ring.

Shadow is from the Sun
Hint: you can estimate the angular size of the ring and match it up with known atmospheric phenomena.

Re: Shadow is from the Sun
Yes, that is what I believe myself, but the shadow is too sharp for it to be from the full sun. If the sun were shining directly behind him in open air, there would be some feathering on the edge of his shadow. That's part of why I believe it's shining through a pinhole.

You should really change the link to:
[link|http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040913.html|Link] The fact that the shooter is in the picture is immaterial. Notice the greater intensity inside the ring as compared to outside. This mean *SOME* type of light gathering device. What kind? A Lense? Nah, to obvious, but still a refracting lense might work. A Prism? Nah. A Mirror? Maybe. A Highly polished something? Maybe. Some kind of Communications Dish? Maybe. Lead Crystal? Hmmm. That would also give that order of color at the edges. The Shadows lineup in the circle and outside the circle. Mean something like Noon or the time they are lined up. This is my guess: How about a mirror that reflects the Noon Sun through a Lead Glass Decorative Window (acting as a refracting lense of sorts), High atop a Building?

Double rainbow!____ici!!
Deluge all around except.. a shaft of light and complete clearing, just over ma maison et tout pr\ufffds - (I think I saw a fleeting LRPD streak across the sky; but as it was sl. magenta-shifted; approaching? - I ducked)
Reversed color/freq. sequence of the two, as prescribed.. the large outer arc did not persist beyond ~ 90\ufffd, but the inner displayed about the most saturated hues I've seen, across a full diameter.. ends/pot-o-gold not quite visible from my vantage. Many minutes; pity no 10 MB digicam - shoulda hauled out the Canon AL-1
Once again, Alchemy transcends the banal homo-caused deep-shit..
Thanks! GRR et Alia
