New Don't forget Darfur
[link|http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2004-09-09-sudan-powell_x.htm|Much as the UN would like us to]

Excerpts:

Secretary of State Colin Powell conceded that the State Department
designation, determined after interviews with more than 1,000 refugees
in Sudan's neighbor, Chad, does not mean new penalties. But he said he
hoped it would pressure Sudan to stop its forces and Arab militiamen it
has armed from destroying more black African villages and killing and
raping inhabitants. He also said it could help persuade Sudan to allow a
large non-Sudanese African force to provide security for Darfur victims
in more than 140 camps.

"Call it a civil war. Call it ethnic cleansing. Call it genocide. Call
it 'none of the above.' " Powell told the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee. "The reality is the same: There are people in Darfur who
desperately need the help of the international community."

...On Wednesday, the administration unveiled a draft United Nations
Security Council resolution that raises the possibility of an embargo on
Sudan's oil, the source of most of its revenue. The United States
already has economic sanctions against Sudan because of its past support
for terrorist groups.

Powell conceded that a U.N. oil embargo is unlikely. He also
acknowledged that even though thousands more Darfur refugees might die,
"nobody is prepared to send troops from the United States or European
Union."

I say:

Quit jawing and do something about it. And what's this
"international community" crap? If there's anything the United Nations
experiment has taught us, it's that there *is* no international
community.

Why the delay? Some idiots will say this is proof that was

in Iraq, so I guess I should point out that Sudan
[link|http://allafrica.com/stories/200408231324.html|has lots of oil, too].

Which means that when we do intervene in force, they'll be saying
[link|http://www.greenleft.org.au/back/2004/593/593p17.htm|*that's* all about the oil.]

For what it's worth, there a rally in front of the UN.
I'm not attending, because I don't believe that's where the solution lies.
The place to rally is Washington, DC.

New And when was Darfur on YOUR radar screen?
Almost nobody, Democrat or Neocon, gave a flying fig about the place until a few months ago, even though the events have been going on for years.

Tell us again why the USA MUST intervene NOW.

The revolution will not be televised. You can apt-get it from the usual mirrors, however.
