Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Am I missing something?
What's the point of that, then?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Is it related to the the "Bangalore Phall" phenomenon over here, whereby lager-fuelled youths, intent on proving their manliness, consume a curry of such ferocious heat that it is actually caustic?

This has an unfortunate morning-after side-effect known as the "ring-stinger".

New According to this they could not have been "caustic"

But, that link refers to this:

And I see no mention of "squirting chili oils directly onto the stomach lining".

Google does not find it. Nor Teoma.

How about it Gryg? Where did this come from?
New Not the chillis, the phalls are caustic.
I had a small amount of someone's (prawn phall with keema pilau rice) once.

My bottom didn't forgive me for about a week. My mouth was literally burnt.

New Alas, that was on dead tree . .
. . and about 10 years ago, so I don't remember the source of the stomach lining experiment. It does make sense since though, since chili hotness is a nerve receptor thing and not a damage thing. Since birds don't have the receptors they eat the hottest chilis with relish and no bad effects.

The upside is you can treat your bird feed with chili (there are commercial products for this) and you will have happy birds and very distressed squirrels.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New I'm sure it is . .
. . a macho thing, or the perveyors of these ultra-hot sauces wouldn't be able to charge such outrageous prices.

On another subject, as far as I have found, Phall is another British thing like Balti - I haven't a single Indian cookbook, old or new, that mentions it's existance. I'm not saying it doesn't exist in India, but if it does it apparently isn't important there. Britain is creating its own "curry culture" which has already diverged significantly from India and Pakistan.

Vindaloos, the hot dishes Web articles compare Phall to are of Portuguese extraction, originating in Goa where the Portuguese had their main trading post. The Portuguese brought chili peppers to India from South America and introduced vinegar as well.
