Welcome to IWETHEY!

New PC-less good stuff
With you on that direction -->

Methinks that for many.. it's not just the utter glass-fragility and OSS (OpenSieve Software) that frosts their pineal glands.. it's the unutterably nit-picky Boolean BS that IS 'computing'.

Telephone: you pick it up, hear dialtone and.. dial. Or, it rings.

For e-mail, and perhaps a lot of web-based info (if not the cutesy Flash.. but maybe that too??) -- you shouldn't have to know about - -

defrag, DOS-box, Registry, format/s, pip B:=A:*.*/V, run Stinger239, regedit, cha cha cha

Very Intelligent people rebel at the tyranny of 0 vs O yada; the sooner we head for rudimentary vox HAL 8999 - the better for legions. Maybe later on, they can explore a *nix desktop, all auto-detected hardware'd up from a Cee Dee; later and slowly... move into the arcane. This would make sense with one's shiny new 6400 x 4800 digital camera, ferinstance. You need a Reason to (be willing to) Suffer - and NOT: just to get fscking e-mail!

Trouble is .. Shrub ain't the only Grade-1 Stubborn-ass Mule; Billy still thinks his crap is Da Futchah and he/they lies with the inborn talents of Rove; always has.

And over all practical matters: those Huge $$ which 'Conservatives' would not like to $ee made redundant. Y'know? It's Machiavelli City in these parts.

Luck going against the Flood,

Ashton
New Re: PC-less good stuff
Yeah, the telephone is a pure terminal. dumb as they come unless & until it delivers you to the power of the network. The network in that case is pretty good, very redundant & intelligent, even if it's not available for public use like Internet 1 is.

And the tv, also a pure terminal. dumb as hell, too, unless & until it gets connected to the network - a one-way network that is also virtually closed to the public.

So now we have the displays that are designed to process 3D graphics. And they're being given new uses, as rich input devices, as devices that connect to the network & give us a 3D interactive view of what's on the network.

Microsoft knows this. They have kept X hidden under a thick, dense cloud of Thin Client, Terminal Server noise, but they can't make X go away, they can only keep most people from knowing about it. And the people who do Linux & ignore the remote user experience are actually kind of complicit in helping Microsoft as they portray Linux as merely something that can replace Microsoft on the desktop. A pity.

There are ticking bombs that could go off and change things quickly, though. One would be a USB or CF or SD device that had a network upgradeable X server in it, another would be a network upgradeable X server for Windows Mobile devices. Another would be an X server for the upcoming handheld playstation, assuming that it will have wireless net connectivity.

All the handheld devices only have to run that one program, ever, the way I see it - the X server. It's like a TV tuner except that it handles the remote part of any X application, and supports the interactivity.
I'm not asking for a lot here, am I?
New LTSP is very useful. (new thread)
Created as new thread #171541 titled [link|/forums/render/content/show?contentid=171541|LTSP is very useful.]

Is it enough to love
Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary
Please
