...and is unlikely to BE in the EU.
1. The death penalty. No matter what Americans think, we don't do death penalties in the EU.
2. Oppression of political opposition. We also don't think it's cricket to imprison, torture and murder the opposition party.
3. Violent oppression of ethnic minorities. The Kurds.
4. More-or-less systemic corruption throughout the political system and police force.
Turkey has been asked to address these matters on numerous occasions (it pops up on the BBC news every now and again; they keep banging on the door) but things don't seem to change.
