Sunny D?
I shied away from that (and forbade Boy drinking it in my presence[0]) when I looked at the ingredients list. From [link|http://www.cspinet.org/new/sunnyd_factsheet.html|here]: Ingredients: Water, High Fructose, Corn Syrup and 2% or Less of Each of the Following: Concentrated Juices (Orange, Tangerine, Apple, Lime, Grapefruit). Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Beta-Carotene, Thiamin Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), Natural Flavors, Food Starch-Modified, Canola Oil, Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Sodium Benzoate To Protect Flavor, Yellow #5, Yellow #6 Look specifically at the second and third ingredients, and then the depressing percentage of real fruit juice. Much better for you are the "high juice" fruit cordials. Less junk, more juice. Yes, they've got sugar in them, but the alternative is worse. [0] Boy impressed me mightily the other day. While selecting a cool, refreshing drink in the corner shop after a pleasant amble in the August sunshine to the [link|http://www.bbc.co.uk/tees/360/priory.shtml|ruined priory], he espied a bottle of sparkling mineral water and took that. I interrogated him as to the reasoning for his choice. Answer? "Makes you burp and doesn't rot your teeth." He's 11.

That reminds me -- Tropicana Taste Test
We bought some of that Tropicana stuff Saturday night, but I didn't want to try it out until it was properly chilled.
I bet it's nice and cold now... I should try some in a bit!
Edit: I've tried it, and it's great! I'm even drinking a second glass of it! Thanks for the suggestion, I'll start buying this as soon as I finish the bottle of Sunny D. we have left. Not gonna throw it out.
And you're right, there is no pulp! Yay! Oh, but it comes in a plastic bottle, not glass, but that's ok, it's lighter for me to lift and pour.

Then again, you might want to go back to water.
At least you may want to reconsider if any sugar is added to your beverages. [link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29434-2004Aug24.html|Washington Post]: Women who drink non-diet soda or fruit punch every day gain weight quickly and face a sharply elevated risk of diabetes, according to a major study released yesterday.
The study of more than 50,000 U.S. nurses found that those who drank just one serving of soda or fruit punch a day tended to gain much more weight than those who drank less than one a month, and had more than an 80 percent increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease. The risk pertained to drinks sweetened with either sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.
[...]
"The message is: Anyone who cares about their health or the health of their family would not consume these beverages," said Walter C. Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health, who helped conduct the study. "Parents who care about their children's health should not keep them at home."
Neither diet soda nor unsweetened fruit juices appear to carry the same risks, the researchers found. Although the study involved only women, the researchers believed that the risks also hold for men. FWIW. Cheers, Scott.

Yeah, I heard that too
Problem is, every day they come out with a new reason you'll get cancer, diabetes, this, that, the other.... Besides, isn't Tropicana 100% orange juice? That's what it says anyway.
Not every human being who is female and drinks soda gets diabetes. No one truly has nailed down exactly what causes diabetes, and my husband didn't like their study, (as described on our local news) because it didn't even have a scientific basis as in test subjects drank this, that, and others this, that.
He also commented that women who drank diet sodas were also probably less likely to eat OTHER sugary items, because maybe they were dieting, so it really didn't prove anything.
I've decided that I'm not gonna worry myself to death about every little thing I eat or drink. I try to eat and drink things in moderation, I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, I have been trying to eat healthier foods lately and more of a balance of protein and carbs, so I figure that's good enough.
But thanks for sharing it anyway, Scott. :)
Nightowl >8#
(Still remembers the year they decided that all women who ate chocolate would gain weight faster.... well I ate some chocolate, not lots, cause I'm not big on it, but I gained almost nothing... and still don't.)
(Oh and get this, I also don't gain weight from soda. I still weigh barely 100 pounds or a little over.)

What can I say?
But that it's an acquired taste.
I tried orange juices with 100 percent juice, but they all seemed to have pulp in them, and I can't stand pulp. Plus I have difficulty swallowing thicker liquids.
But I'll keep it in mind. Maybe someone will make an orange juice that doesn't taste like pulp.
And regardless, I would think that Sunny Delight is still probably better than Pepsi. :)

To be honest, I wouldn't bet on it.
Pepsi has a truckload of sugar in it, but not all that much else: From [link|http://www.nspforum.com/faq/bbs.cgi?read=629|here] (do try to ignore their scaremongering about the ingredients - sucrose is regular sugar, for goodness' sake): Coca Cola/Diet Pepsi Ingredients
The following was sent to me by Janice Prieskorn of home office and I wanted to share with all of you: Carbonated Water High Fructose Corn Syrup - (sugar) Sucrose - used in the manufacture of plastics and cellulose (includes paper, textiles, and explosives) Caramel Color - (artificial) Phosphoric Acid - a clear colorless liquid used in fertilizers, soaps, detergents, food flavorings, pharmaceuticals and animal feed Natural Flavors Caffeine - a bitter white alkaloid (contains nitrogen from plants including nicotine, quinine, cocaine, and morphine) - also found in coffee, tea, kola nuts, chocolate, and used as a stimulant and diuretic
DIET PEPSI
Carbonated Water Caramel Color Nutrasweet - also known as aspartame - see previous FAQ article Phosphoric acid -- see above Potassium benzoate - a preservative used for freshness Caffeine - see above Citric Acid - a colorless acid derived by fermenting lemon, lime and pineapple juices and also used to prepare citrates in flavorings and in metal polishes Natural Flavors Also, Sunny Delight has all those lovely "thickeners" in it. *shudder*. Try the high juice cordials. You'll like them, I'm sure.

Can you get the Robinson's drinks over there?
I see that you [link|http://www.britishdelights.com/drinks.htm|can]. That's just a brief Googling result. If you like it, I expect a more diligent search would reveal to you a less expensive supplier.
Also, consider [link|http://www.britshoppe.com/roborbarwat.html|this]. Much less gloopy than Sunny Delight. But do make it up somewhat weaker than the web page suggests. The suggested one part squash to four parts water would make me go crosseyed.

Re: Can you get the Robinson's drinks over there?
Sorry, John won't buy food or drink online. But I'll see if our local grocery carries any.
I went on a search for real orange juice without pulp once before in St. Louis, but only came up with Sunny D, so I'm up for suggestions that can be purchased at the local grocery store.

Dunno.
Usually people who have trouble swallowing are put on a thickened-liquid diet.
Even [link|http://www.cadburyschweppes.com/EN/Brands/About/Beverages/factsheet_orangina.htm?printable=true|Orangina] is better than SunnyD. Of course, if you get that you'll be increasing our trade deficit and ruining the economy, but hey, if you can't drink All American Orange Juice [likely imported from [link|http://www.theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040805/NEWS/408050342/1001/BUSINESS|Brazil] these days], then I guess you'll have to do something....

Had it since I was a child
the Doctor called it a low-gag reflex (or was it high? I think it was low), where I have a very limited tolerance for things like tongue depressors and such. I could barely drink a shake, for example, so I stay away from thicker stuff. Most thick drink I can drink is a frozen coke, but it's not really that thick.

Re: To be honest, I wouldn't bet on it.
Isn't that High Fructose Corn Syrup the same thing you were complaining about in Sunny-D in the first place? Then you add sugar to that? And what's the percentage of fruit juice in Pepsi? Oh yea, 0.0%.
But overall you're right, Sunny-D isn't the best choice. though I would rate it higher than Pepsi (remember caffeine isn't considered good for you either, despite the number of people that live on the stuff :)

USA Pepsi vs the rest
Damn corn syrup. Stupid sugar tarrifs. Up here in Canuckleland we usually get the real deal. I prefer Pepsi over Coke myself. It's sweeter and not as dry as Coke. Other soft drinks favs are Dr. Pepper, the various cherry and vanilla colas, Brio, Jones Blue Bubble Gum and Foo Foo Berry. Adding milk to colas works nicely too. A thin shake. (Egg nog and cola makes a wonderful yucky brown colour. :-p ) Stay away from soft drinks with real fruit juice in it as the milk produces a scum layer on top that you can push into the drink with your finger.
Oh, an important note about Brio I discovered this past weekend. Don't drink it with spicy foods. It keeps bringing back the hot sensation on your tongue. I think it even amplifies it as the chillies I added to the pizza slice wasn't as hot when initially eaten.
