Annex Afghanistan?
Turn Adghanistan into a US Territory and give control to the Northern Alliance as long as they obey US Law?
Good idea or bad idea? Sort of like Guam?

Bad idea
Afghanistan as an American protectorate (or whatever the hell Guam is) would be under constant attack from the Pashtuns in Pakistan who just know they need a country ethnically pure just like Allah made them. The best we can hope for is a divided country. And if Pakistan goes to hell with the Pashtun (I'm sure they'll find Allah down there waiting for them), Afghanistan is meaningless.

Re: Hell, it's no worse than putting Turkey in the EU...
And which country is constantly attacking Turkey, maybe you are referring to the Kurds. Last I heard, there was no Kurdistan. On the other hand, a weak Turkey taken by a strong Iraq or a resurgent Fascist Islam would cause you little European boys problems. It should be in your interest to make Turkey as strong, as secular, and as integrated with European trade as possible. And if it offends your cultured (sic) European sensibilities, then I, for one, am willing to live with it.

Reasons why Turkey is currently not in the EU...
...and is unlikely to BE in the EU.
1. The death penalty. No matter what Americans think, we don't do death penalties in the EU. 2. Oppression of political opposition. We also don't think it's cricket to imprison, torture and murder the opposition party. 3. Violent oppression of ethnic minorities. The Kurds. 4. More-or-less systemic corruption throughout the political system and police force.
Turkey has been asked to address these matters on numerous occasions (it pops up on the BBC news every now and again; they keep banging on the door) but things don't seem to change.

Why should *we* "fix" *their* "problems", when *you*...
...weren't going to make, IIRC, Indonesia a State because of *their* various "problems"?
Why don't *you* just "fix the[ir] problems and let'em in"?

I wasn't referring only to Turkey's problems.

Is that supposed to be a logical counter to my argument?
You were, AFAICR, referring only to Indonesia's problems, earlier.

Please NO! We have enough people on welfare now....
You advocate taking in a population where about 30% are literate in their own language? Keeping in mind that US subjects are not allowed to carry knives these days, perhaps you would like to take on the responsibility of telling them that they have to give up their AKs. We get the expense of building their society and the blame for mucking with their culture. It's a lose/lose situation all the way around.

Impractical
Remember, were talking about a country where the predominent industry is production of "controlled substances", the primary occupation is murder, and their version of football involves a freshly decapitated goat as the ball.
Obey U.S. law? The very concept of obedience to any law is completely unknown in Afghanistan, and they wouldn't be able to understand it if it were introduced.
If we killed every adult male (looks like "adult" starts at about 12 there) as combatants, the women would bring up the male kids to be "just like daddy".
No, Afghanistan is pretty much a write-off.
On the other hand, presuming their continued and increasing cooperation, we should do our best to see that Uzbekistan and Tajikistan become notably secure and prosperous compared to their neighbors (Tajikistan just offered use of three airbases). Pakistan is still an open question.
