Yep, you can deathmatch.
Just like laser tag.
But Doom 3 is more like Alien. Creatures invade, you get to drive them off. Scary as hell, and just like Alien come to life.
I usually only played Doom II in single player mode. There were a lot of times I just about jumped out of my skin when something surprised me in the game.
And yes, Barney must die. There's another version of Doom that lets you blow away offending processes. Just make sure you don't hit the monster tagged with the numeral 1.
Having said that, my personal opinion is that games like Grand Theft Auto never should have been made. I overheard a kid in the video store a few days ago talking about how cool it was to be able to walk into a mall and blow everyone away. Now THAT is scary.
Doom isn't the same thing by a LONG shot.
