I love games

Scrabble, chess, Risk, poker, setback, Trivial Pursuit, charades, Pictionary, ...

They're games with a person or more, mabye some beers, lies and jokes...

What is sexual component of the interest here? How is this related to the ultraviolence of Japanese comics? Why are kids so fascinated by it?

Fundamentally different

That's a nasty creature, like a big spider. It's not cold-blooded violent murder by another person, and it's certainly not participatory cold-blooded murder. I've actually squashed and gassed innumerable spiders and other disgusting arthopods when they confronted my living space in an unacceptable way.

I don't see the appeal of vicarious murder of other persons.

When I was a kid we often visited the drive-in. My mother liked the B-movie gothic horror flicks of the day, which were almost all very tame and even silly. One movie however did feature a knife and a psycho. I can still remember having a literal physical shock at the sound of someone being stabbed and slashed, and feeling the instant impulse to vomit. I did not consider this a pleasant experience and have never willingly sat through another such episode. I do NOT understand what the appeal of it is, and I'm certain that the desensitization involved does tremendous damage to young people. (Is this a call for censorship? No. If I were a parent my kids would be rigorously prevented from seeing such things in my own house. That's all a person can do.)

It's a game where you get to be a beefy locked-and-loaded steroid case and wander about violently killing things, people or creatures. I even saw a demo featuring Barney the dinosaur. Google "deathmatch".

Nope.

Think of being a marine in the Alien movies.

Think about the fact that the crew was dispensible in preservation of the "specimen"

Now, transform that into, Scientists developing similar specimens for a Corporation to profit by. Things go horribly wrong producing a myriad of "mutated experiments" that are basically capable of making any human a Zombie, just by infecting them.

It is you "Duty" as a Marine, to protect the installation and such. Which has very unstable power stations, making the WHOLE game Pitch black and not being able to see unless you have a flashlight. But to "Defend yourself" you have to switch to your weapon away from your light source.

Also, it seems that some of your fellow Marines have gotten infected as well. Proving MUCH more difficult, as you basically have to "Head shot" them.

Now, when you see this was all caused by a Corporation Obessed with making more profit... well... maybe you would understand.

Although it is impossible to know exactly what caused these teens to attack their own classmates and teachers, a number of factors probably were involved. One possible contributing factor is violent video games. Harris and Klebold enjoyed playing the bloody, shoot-'em-up video game Doom, a game licensed by the U.S. military to train soldiers to effectively kill. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which tracks Internet hate groups, found in its archives a copy of Harris' web site with a version of Doom that he had customized. In his version there are two shooters, each with extra weapons and unlimited ammunition, and the other people in the game can't fight back. For a class project, Harris and Klebold made a videotape that was similar to their customized version of Doom. In the video, Harris and Klebold dress in trench coats, carry guns, and kill school athletes. They acted out their videotaped performance in real life less than a year later. An investigator associated with the Wiesenthal Center said Harris and Klebold were "playing out their game in God mode" (Pooley, 1999, p. 32).

They didn't customize a copy of Risk or make scary looking chess pieces. They used the same software the military apparently uses (?) to train people to kill effectively, so it must be a very realistic simulation.

Yep, you can deathmatch.

Just like laser tag.

But Doom 3 is more like Alien. Creatures invade, you get to drive them off. Scary as hell, and just like Alien come to life.

I usually only played Doom II in single player mode. There were a lot of times I just about jumped out of my skin when something surprised me in the game.

And yes, Barney must die. There's another version of Doom that lets you blow away offending processes. Just make sure you don't hit the monster tagged with the numeral 1.

Having said that, my personal opinion is that games like Grand Theft Auto never should have been made. I overheard a kid in the video store a few days ago talking about how cool it was to be able to walk into a mall and blow everyone away. Now THAT is scary.

Doom isn't the same thing by a LONG shot.

Over here, GTA is 18-certificated

This means that it's a criminal (not civil) offence to supply the game to anyone under that age.

Not enforced nearly hard enough, but it's a start.

GTA is fun...

... if you're mentally equipped to separate fantasy from reality.

I don't necessarily have a problem with the game for adults

GTA has a much thinner fantasy/reality line than most games, though.

And then I saw the first reply at the top of my unread thread was yours. *sigh* So instead of a good discussion about Doom III, I got a shallow insult-fest about violence in computer games.

Perhaps Ross should have jumped his post earlier

Lets see Doom 3
it involves players blowing the crap out of various things using various weapons. It better than doom one because you choices of where you blow the crap out of things and how is increased by (inset adjective here) Im sorry, as a non game player Ross's thread was more interesting but you also should be able to have a clean discussion of your interests. So lets all play the keep on subject or start new thread a little better.

But otherwise, I quite agree. I'm not a fanatical player of FPS games, but I do like them. Doom 3 is a really big fish in FPS games so I'm going to be interested.
