Doom 3 First Impressions
P4 2.4 CPU 512MB RAM 4xAGP GeForce FX5200 128MB
Doom configured itself to 640x480 Medium Quality.
Looks nice. Not choppy so far. Would look nicer with a better card.
Not that it really matters much once you start playing.
Doom 3 is Waaay to freakin dark. And I don't mean the kind of dark you can counter by turning up your monitor brightness. The "scary" element of Doom 3 so far seems to rely totally on pitch black darkness from which zombie guys attack you. Either that or they pour out of wall access panels or lockers like clowns from a minature car. Think of the obvious "lights go out, silence, then attack" moments from a horror movie strung together every 30 seconds or so.
Your only defense against the darkness is a pitiful little flashlight, which is a weapon, meaning you have to switch away from your real weapon to use it.
And I hope you like reloading (slowly, in the middle of battle). I don't, but I'm getting used to it. Ammo is scarce (I'm out at the moment) and the zombie marine guys seem to be pretty well armed (better than you too often) and I think they have body armor so head shots may be in order. Sure am glad the darkness is there to help with my aim.
Eh, maybe I'll have more to say about it later, if I can resist the urge to exit it in frustration muttering to myself, "Fuck this Game!" as I have twice so far.
Maybe I'm just more suited towards deathmatch and mowing down (visible) hordes style gameplay.

Doom 3 - 2nd Impressions
Ok, I'm in a much better mood now and have jumped back in. I tried raising the resolution to 1024x768 on the above mentioned machine. It runs reasonably smooth until the fighting starts, so I backed down to 800x600 and it seems fine so far. Looks great.
I don't mind the dark so much now. The "gotcha" moments have been constant and effective. Not as frustrating now that I've got a better handle on what works against what and have learned not to barge into any rooms without carefully listening from around the corner and out the door first. Sound plays a big role in this game.

Why are people so interested in this childish ultraviolence? Any idiot can conjure boogeymen. What's the point? What's interesting about this garbage?
On another level, anyone who would willingingly allow his kids to fuck with this digital vomitus is guilty of child abuse.

I love games
Scrabble, chess, Risk, poker, setback, Trivial Pursuit, charades, Pictionary, ...
They're games with a person or more, mabye some beers, lies and jokes...
What is sexual component of the interest here? How is this related to the ultraviolence of Japanese comics? Why are kids so fascinated by it?

Fundamentally different
That's a nasty creature, like a big spider. It's not cold-blooded violent murder by another person, and it's certainly not participatory cold-blooded murder. I've actually squashed and gassed innumerable spiders and other disgusting arthopods when they confronted my living space in an unacceptable way.
I don't see the appeal of vicarious murder of other persons.
When I was a kid we often visited the drive-in. My mother liked the B-movie gothic horror flicks of the day, which were almost all very tame and even silly. One movie however did feature a knife and a psycho. I can still remember having a literal physical shock at the sound of someone being stabbed and slashed, and feeling the instant impulse to vomit. I did not consider this a pleasant experience and have never willingly sat through another such episode. I do NOT understand what the appeal of it is, and I'm certain that the desensitization involved does tremendous damage to young people. (Is this a call for censorship? No. If I were a parent my kids would be rigorously prevented from seeing such things in my own house. That's all a person can do.)

Nope.
Think of being a marine in the Alien movies.
Think about the fact that the crew was dispensible in preservation of the "specimen"
Now, transform that into, Scientists developing similar specimens for a Corporation to profit by. Things go horribly wrong producing a myriad of "mutated experiments" that are basically capable of making any human a Zombie, just by infecting them.
It is you "Duty" as a Marine, to protect the installation and such. Which has very unstable power stations, making the WHOLE game Pitch black and not being able to see unless you have a flashlight. But to "Defend yourself" you have to switch to your weapon away from your light source.
Also, it seems that some of your fellow Marines have gotten infected as well. Proving MUCH more difficult, as you basically have to "Head shot" them.
Now, when you see this was all caused by a Corporation Obessed with making more profit... well... maybe you would understand.

Posted elsewhere but why not?
Here's an extensive quote:
On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold launched an assault on Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, murdering 13 and wounding 23 before turning the guns on themselves. Although it is impossible to know exactly what caused these teens to attack their own classmates and teachers, a number of factors probably were involved. One possible contributing factor is violent video games. Harris and Klebold enjoyed playing the bloody, shoot-'em-up video game Doom, a game licensed by the U.S. military to train soldiers to effectively kill. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which tracks Internet hate groups, found in its archives a copy of Harris' web site with a version of Doom that he had customized. In his version there are two shooters, each with extra weapons and unlimited ammunition, and the other people in the game can't fight back. For a class project, Harris and Klebold made a videotape that was similar to their customized version of Doom. In the video, Harris and Klebold dress in trench coats, carry guns, and kill school athletes. They acted out their videotaped performance in real life less than a year later. An investigator associated with the Wiesenthal Center said Harris and Klebold were "playing out their game in God mode" (Pooley, 1999, p. 32).
They didn't customize a copy of Risk or make scary looking chess pieces. They used the same software the military apparently uses (?) to train people to kill effectively, so it must be a very realistic simulation.

That's sophistry. You might as well blame Mahler for suicides because depressive types like it.
How can there be any doubt that a young person who is filling his days with crude violence, even if simulated, is being permanently damaged by it? It's common sense.

40 cups a day of green tea will give you cancer, too.
All things in moderation. Too much of certain vitamins will kill you too. A small amount of radiation can actually reduce cancer incidence.
So stop arguing about the games, and realize that the problem lies in how they are used.

Yep, you can deathmatch.
Just like laser tag.
But Doom 3 is more like Alien. Creatures invade, you get to drive them off. Scary as hell, and just like Alien come to life.
I usually only played Doom II in single player mode. There were a lot of times I just about jumped out of my skin when something surprised me in the game.
And yes, Barney must die. There's another version of Doom that lets you blow away offending processes. Just make sure you don't hit the monster tagged with the numeral 1.
Having said that, my personal opinion is that games like Grand Theft Auto never should have been made. I overheard a kid in the video store a few days ago talking about how cool it was to be able to walk into a mall and blow everyone away. Now THAT is scary.
Doom isn't the same thing by a LONG shot.

Over here, GTA is 18-certificated
This means that it's a criminal (not civil) offence to supply the game to anyone under that age.
Not enforced nearly hard enough, but it's a start.
GTA is fun...

Okay, after buying Doom3 Wednesday Night, 8/4
I <head position=down amount="very low">install the Beast's OS on my Pure Linux Machine</head>.
I then installed Doom3. Heysoos.
For gameplay and overall experience, I judge every "FPS" or Doom style game, by the Ultimate FPS Game (IMO): System Shock (v1)
Well, they did a Great Eval of SS. They got nearly all the Gameplay of SS into D3. They got the Environmental aspects right. The scary parts right, they music change proper (changes as the area changes) and there is even a background heart sound, to sound like you hearing your own heart in you ears...
Overall Experience in this game, 1 to 10 (1 using Word as a game, 10 using SS). I'd give D3 a 9.4. I have a pretty Darn good Machine (not far behind bleed) I can only do 800x600 with most effects... for those HUGE Machine reqs I deducted .3, For getting it right mostly (some of the transitions from room to room are predictable) I only deducted .3.
DOOM3 == 9.4
Discounting Hardware reqs: DOOM3 == 9.7

Own all of them....
Thief: The Dark Project Thief: The Metal Age Thief: Deadly Shadows
Any Thief, I don't know why it wouldn't tickle my fancy. They seemed to be very predictable. I could guess where everything was. Lost interest quickly. I don't remember anything stand out... Mainly they were only on the machine for a brief time.
System Shock 2: Couldn't get this to run on W2K period... I have never tried after W2K... Gotta find that and try now with WXP... (or so says Peter)
Another Very good game, is MDK2. Probably an 8.8 overall. Reason being... LONG and Tough. A bit predictable though... given the Crazyness of this game. Very original.

That should get you up 'n running.
Me, I always liked the Thief series for the flavour. From Constantine's house, to Viktoria's betrayal, to the classic "Life of the Party" - yeah, loot locations were pretty obvious, but it was the feel...
I wish I could replay some of the older animation files. They oozed flavour.

Scary game elements.
I recall the scrags in Quake were quite terrifying, mostly because of their largely inerrant aim and blook-chilling sound. I remember doing a possibly strange thing to get over them - I fished out their "I'm here" sound from the game .PAK files and set it up at work as my "you've got mail" sound.
Worked a treat.
