syslog and samba works for MACs too.
make em read only. guest access would work.
P2-300MHZ with 128MB of RAM, and 1 hard drive. A NIC and temporary videocard. All you need.
Guest access will just GIVE you that.
All ya gotta do is ask.

Ask, as in you could build us one?
Remember, we're using RedHat Enterprise because we want "support from a real company". I know it wouldn't take much hardware. But he wants something he can stuff in a rack, plug in, and it works with Linux, Mac and Windows boxes, all (preferably) using XML.

Cross platform logging server
This is really a new idea and would be a very interesting project, athough I don't see the need for XML. I'd be more inclined to just write HTML and view the log in a frame.

Not really a "need" but would make it easier
Because we've got multiple platforms, we're moving to the idea that events going from one system to another go in XML. If a back-end process that is currently on a Windows box moves to a Linux box or vice-versa, the sending application doesn't have to know.
Then simply capture every XML event and log it somewhere. Then we can query against the XML logs and recreate the entire life of an order.

RHES v3.0 is fine.
There is already many things that you can do automagic conversion to file formats.
Create a FIFO and log syslogd to that. Or add records into a DB 24x7.
Shouldn't be to tough Drew.
BTW, drop me a line in e-mail.

You could also do something like this...

Seems right up your alley.
