Excerpt:
Israel has completed military rehearsals for a pre-emptive strike
against Iran's nuclear power facility at Bushehr, Israeli officials
told the London-based Sunday Times.
Such a strike is likely if Russia supplies Iran with fuel rods for
enriching uranium. The rods, currently stored at a Russian port, are
expected to be delivered late next year after a dispute over financial
terms is resolved.
An Israeli defense source in Tel Aviv, who confirmed that the military
rehearsals had taken place, told the paper: "Israel will on no account
permit Iranian reactors - especially the one being built in Bushehr
with Russian help - to go critical."
I say:
The standard lie on this is that Iran wants this reactor for peaceful
purposes. It's one of those transparent pro forma lies that no one
believes, but some people pretend to. Everyone knows that Iran is just
swimming in oil, and has very little need for nuclear technology, at least
not for peaceful purposes. Nuclear medicine? On that scale? Please.
Bomb them before they can come online, and you can forget about nuclear
blackmail later. If Clinton had had this kind of balls with North Korea, we
wouldn't be dealing with that particular mess now.
Of course Israel bombed Saddam's nuke weapon plant once, and Saddam just
tried to get it all started again. (We've all heard about how Joe Wilson's
been outed as a liar about that Niger uranium, thing, right? By the way,
Iran's involved in that, too.) So this treatment is like botox - it needs
a touchup application from time to time. It works, so long as you stick with
it. But let it slide just once, and you've got North Korea.
In other words, it's a good way of coping, but not a viable long term
solution. Israel bought us time in Iraq, and may buy us time in Iran, but
that's all.
