I am about to be very sad
Lying scumbag vendor claimed to have Linux version of software. The box was purchased to run it. But since it is Linux, it can do SO MUCH MORE.
And then, this week was training.
Linux? Well, we can let you play with an internal pre-alpha version. If you want ot run production, it'll have to be NT.
ARRGGGGGGGGG!!!
This box is about to be reformatted and Win2K installed.

And to top it off, there was no damn reason
I could have designed around a portion of it being NT. I accepted that. But then they told us they also had the Linux version. Which then caused a MUCH different architecture. So we ended paying a lot more for a big single box then several small ones. Bastards.

Yup
Depended on this box.
On the other hand, I might have an escape. The program also runs on Macs, OS/X. I'm lobbying for a Dual G5 right now.

I THINK it's a go
CTO just specced out a dual 2.0 Ghz G5 desktop with 4.5 GB of ram for me. We'll see when he instructs the IT manager to order it.

Nah, it'll be the central piece a a large scale buildout
Running Sun Gridengine, mailing tools, merge/purge, and a whole lot more.
Then we get either an HP or IBM blade server and start adding dual or quad CPU blades as needed.
We also have allocated some decent $$ for disk.
This is the beginning of the end of the mainframe in our compay. It took me 9 years, but it is finally happening.
The software that we are currently dealing with (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc hassles) will be replacing a system that currently eats about 40% of all mainframe CPU cycles. So it is worth it, Windows hassles and all.

Don't be. Vendor fudged again.
Yeah, they have it. But NO US customers are running it on a Mac right now. We won't be the 1st.

Time to find another software vendor?

Can't
In this industry, there are only 3 vendors of this type of software. The other 2 are worse. We are committed to using it, and they know it. It's not like we would choose a different one basde on the OS it ran on, it is now a matter of implementation decisions.
So it looks like it will run on an Windows box on the side.
No Mac for me. Easy come, easy go.
