Lived a few km from that airport - Chep Lap Kok
That crash is well known in HK as it was the 1st crash at the new HK International Chep Lap Kok airport.
The blame went on the pilot-in-command (he was a chinese national) but friends of mine who are pilots that fly there say that CLK is notorious for the gusting turbulance & the ATC folk should not have agreed to let him land in the conditions.
IIRC the aircraft got hit by a rolling squall just as he was about to land. It flipped the plane & the low speed prevented it being a worse accident.
The place I lived in - Discovery Bay - is 15 min bus ride across the Island the aiport is located on - Lantau Island. Lantau is 3 times bigger than HK Island & at its tip is 30 kms from Macao.
As you will be aware that accident was back in 1999 (just 3 weeks after you & I met at LinuxWorld in San Jose :-).
Cheers Doug
