That crash is well known in HK as it was the 1st crash at the new HK International Chep Lap Kok airport.

The blame went on the pilot-in-command (he was a chinese national) but friends of mine who are pilots that fly there say that CLK is notorious for the gusting turbulance & the ATC folk should not have agreed to let him land in the conditions.

IIRC the aircraft got hit by a rolling squall just as he was about to land. It flipped the plane & the low speed prevented it being a worse accident.

The place I lived in - Discovery Bay - is 15 min bus ride across the Island the aiport is located on - Lantau Island. Lantau is 3 times bigger than HK Island & at its tip is 30 kms from Macao.

As you will be aware that accident was back in 1999 (just 3 weeks after you & I met at LinuxWorld in San Jose :-).
