Born in Tanta, Egypt, Badawi came to the United States 18 years ago after meeting an American woman in Europe. He is now has U.S. citizenship.

All the publicity, Badawi said, has virtually shut down his businesses, leaving his 45 employees out of work. Badawi said he and his family are now staying at a hotel to avoid the media stakeout at their house.
He said he has tried to stay level-headed about the long nightmare.
"I can't say I'm mad," Badawi said. "I'm not happy I've been in jail, but I guess they had a job to do."
It must be terrible to be in such a situation. But I support reasonable detention if that's the only practical alternative.
Cheers,
Scott.
