I know auto-refresh is evil...
But as a matter of convenience/laziness (Ok, most probably the latter) it would be kinda nifty to have the [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/board/show?boardid=1|IWT main page] auto-refresh every ten minutes or something, if there are no new posts. This way, through my working day, I could just glance at the taskbar every now and then, and jump in when see the '(NEW)', rather than going through the 'Refresh-sigh-Refresh-sigh-Refresh-sigh' cycle. And knowing zIWT, it wouldn't have to auto-refresh for very long before a new post appears :)
Any thoughts?

Added.
User preference settings to control it to come later unless someone really complains.
Sorry it took so long; I was in the shower when you posted. ;-)

Can we not track them as active?
I think that people who have the forums open but go elsewhere should not be tracked in active users. With autorefresh they'll always be thought of as active, whether or not they click on the site.

Something I don't get
auto-refresh every ten minutes or something, if there are no new posts. Why would it need to refresh if there are no new pots? I'd think you'd want the exact opposite: every ten minutes check if there are new posts and refresh if there are any. I must be looking at something backwards.

Re: Something I don't get
And would would you suggest the browser check to see if there are no new posts without refreshing...?
Basically, John wants it to refresh until there's something new, at which point the "NEW" will show up in the title bar and he can happily satisfy his addiction.
Just an automated version of what a lot of people do here anyway: hit refresh until there are new posts.
