New Fallujaban?

With U.S. Marines gone and central government authority virtually nonexistent, Fallujah resembles an Islamic mini-state \ufffd anyone caught selling alcohol is flogged and paraded in the city. Men are encouraged to grow beards and barbers are warned against giving "Western" hair cuts.

It appears Fallujah was always among the more religous citis in Iraq, but there is a big risk of the rest if Iraq going this way as US soldiers step back.

It will be very ironic if the US puts the religious fantics out of power in Afganistan and puts them in power in Iraq.

New In certain respects this is predicatable - like Somalia

In times of chaos, uncertainty & uncomprehensible change, many ordinary people turn to religion & the Moslems are more inclined to do so thwn most. At this rtime in their history they as a group feel under attack.

Religion provides a perception of authority & stability. Criminals usually become the target of peoples confusion & anger & Islam (the religion) in particualr has effective ways of punishing repeat offenders.

Iraq under Saddam was to a certain degree stable. That got taken away.

The thing to cap it off for them is that the extremeists in Islam are winning people over more than any other faction.
