New We'll let Peter comment on this one

A guy on Sri Lanka's team was recently ordered to stop throwing something he calls a "doosra" because a scientific analysis of his motion shows he's breaking the laws of the game.

Muttiah Muralitharan's doosra turns the ball away from right-handed batsmen rather than into them.

Scientists found Muralitharan straightens his arm by about 10 degrees when bowling the delivery (that's throwing to you and me). ''The report shows the degree of straightening is well outside the ICC's specified level of tolerance,'' International Cricket Council Chief Executive Malcolm Speed said. ''Sri Lanka Cricket has instructed Mr. Muralitharan not to bowl the delivery. The ICC supports this action.''

The report, conducted at the University of Western Australia, showed an initial straightening of Muralitharan's arm of around 14 degrees, which after some remedial work was reduced to 10 degrees, the ICC said.

New Say what?!?
Sounds like the guy has perfected the screwball. And that's illegal in cricket?

New Bowling is NOT throwing.
At that point, the article loses all credibility.

You are not allowed to throw the ball in cricket unless you are fielding.

Anyway, Law 24.3:

3. Definition of fair delivery \ufffd the arm

A ball is fairly delivered in respect of the arm if, once the bowler\ufffds arm has reached the level of the shoulder in the delivery swing, the elbow joint is not straightened partially or completely from that point until the ball has left the hand.

This definition shall not debar a bowler from flexing or rotating the wrist in the delivery swing.

New Its in the news in Oz - 1st surfaced 5 years ago

This Sri Lankan is now the world holder for number of wickets taken. Australians Shane Warn was desperately hoping the Australian tour against Zimbabwe would go ahead (cancelled last week) just so he could try to get ahead of Murali's record.

It seems he has a bone deformity that allows him to straighten his arm in a way that is borderline between bowling & chucking (chucking the ball aint't allowed).

He recently underwent analysis with cameras focussed on his arm movement & lights attached to points along his arm. This didn't completely resolve the matter but he was more or less cleared. Aussie cricket authorities have threatened to accuse him of chucking if he bolws his 'doosra' (dervived from Duce & relating to a double movement in the bowling).

I tend to view the rucus as 'sour grapes' on our part & bloody good bowling by Murali. :-)
