New This story always does the rounds
Does this hapless victim exist, or is it just a re-telling of a [link|http://www.snopes.com/autos/hazards/gasvapor.asp|bogus warning]?

The story did the rounds in Australia last year, and was debunked by the truly wonderful [link|http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s911863.htm|Media Watch] TV program.
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New ABC tried it
[link|http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/Business/Gas_station_fires_hunter_040517-1.html|Only story] I saw on the first two pages of [link|http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Matthew+Erhorn%22|Google results] that said it was unlikely. One other link said that some experts say it's theoretically possible but unlikely, then concluded with the fire chief saying he didn't believe it until he say this case himself. So good on Good Morning America. Bad on everyone else.

Implicitly condoning stupidity since 2001.
New More than likely it was a static spark.
As he had just put the thing in... and prolly touch the first metal... causing the static shock.
