New About those nonexistent WMDs
[link|http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,120137,00.html|The hazards of playing burden-of-proof games]

Excerpts:

"The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found," Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt (search), the chief military spokesman in Iraq, told reporters in Baghdad. "The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy."

The round detonated before it would be rendered inoperable, Kimmitt said, which caused a "very small dispersal of agent."

A senior Bush administration official told Fox News that the sarin gas shell is the second chemical weapon discovered recently.

Two weeks ago, U.S. military units discovered mustard gas that was used as part of an IED. Tests conducted by the Iraqi Survey Group (search) and others concluded the mustard gas was "stored improperly," which made the gas "ineffective."

They believe the mustard gas shell may have been one of 550 for which former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein failed to account when he made his weapons declaration shortly before Operation Iraqi Freedom began last year.

Investigators are trying to determine how insurgents obtained these weapons ? whether they were looted or supplied...

Gazi George, a former Iraqi nuclear scientist under Saddam's regime, told Fox News that he believes many similar weapons stockpiled by the former regime were either buried underground or transported to Syria. He noted that the airport where the device was detonated is on the way to Baghdad from the Syrian border.

George said the finding likely will just be the first in a series of discoveries of such weapons.

"Saddam is the type who will not store those materials in a military warehouse. He's gonna store them either underground, or, as I said, lots of them have gone west to Syria and are being brought back with the insurgencies," George told Fox News. "It is difficult to look in areas that are not obvious to the military's eyes.

"I'm sure they're going to find more once time passes," he continued, saying one year is not enough for the survey group or the military to find the weapons.

I say:

[link|http://www.angelfire.com/ca3/marlowe/fhlm.html|I've said it before] and I'll say it again: we don't need to find the WMD to prove we were right to depose Saddam. That was only one of very many reasons it should have been done. But the sleazes on the Left seized upon this embarrasment and made [link|http://www.angelfire.com/ca3/marlowe/iraq.lying.about.lying.html|all they could] out of it. Now this straw is finally beginning to escape their grasp. It's not likely we'll find stockpiles before the election, but we've found enough to put pressure on this overextended rhetorical salient. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, and evidence not yet discovered is not he same as evidence not existing. Feigned impatience is no match for unfeigned determination.

But let us never forget: [link|http://www.angelfire.com/ca3/marlowe/fhlm.html|it wasn't only because of the WMDs].

Oh, and by the way... [link|http://216.26.163.62/2004/ea_nkorea_05_16.html|what's this] about Syrian WMD technicians in that North Korean train explosion?

DEAL WITH IT.
Americans: a pack, not a herd.
Never mind all the mass graves. Where's the nerve gas?

New Hey Lazarus, welcome back from the crypt.
New Yeah, I thought the faint whiff,
or whiff of a whiff of sarin would revive him. He's still looking a little green, though, from all that recycled triumphalism he's been subsisting on. Shall we go burrowing for the post from last fall wherein we were assured that once the wicked SH was safely in our custody all the fight would go out of the natives?

In related news, Josh Marshall has a firsthand report from a civilian chum on the scene.
...Abu Ghuraib just confirmed what we have been hearing here for a long time. I am amazed that the ICRC didn't push this forcefully. It is very easy to find people who have been in the prison and could make statements to that effect. What I am sure amazed the ICRC was the callousness of the Bush administration blowing off eye-witness testimony of ICRC delegates in the prison. It had to be done with pictures and I applaud and honor the men who blew the whistle ... If I was the NCOIC of that place I would have been filing courts martial papers just to make sure it was indestructibly documented that things were going on ... Someone obviously did something official for General Taguba to be sent there.

The Iraqi people, even my 150 staff think the Americans are essentially not welcome anymore. They fear for their security but would rather go through a cataclysm with a new Iraqi police and army as their security force, rather than be occupied by the Americans. Then they could work through the system and know that their security was in their hands ... Trust me I am training 40 Iraqi bodyguards and the demand is getting serious. Listen Josh, EVERYONE outside of the Green Zone, Iraqis Westerners and Americans alike refer to the CPA and the US Army as "The AMERICANS" as if they were a third-party nation.

cordially,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New We must not allow them to remain unfree!
We must teach their ruling 3% to wisely invest their 50+ % of the IGNP - in US War Bonds, even if not too many of Our ruling 3% seem to favor such investments.

But first, via a grant to the Diebold Corp - we must teach them how to create "a US level of Certainty" re the outcomes of their free and open elections, just as in the US. It's the least we can do.. removing the vicissitudes of chance.

(Perhaps we could lend them our Supreme Court members, for a couple years.. With both Diebold and Scalia, could anything possibly go wrong with an election count?)

Spread the wealth! - wisely, say We.

Constructively,

moi

Wow! Someone found an unused shell from the Iran/Iraq war. They're still finding shells in France from WW-I.
