a small guide for the owl to indicate why the sharks suck
from the NHL rulebook [link|http://nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/rule62.html|http://nhl.com/hocke...ebook/rule62.html] A minor penalty shall be imposed on a player who holds an opponent by using his hands, arms or legs. NJ lite [link|http://nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/rule67.html|http://nhl.com/hocke...ebook/rule67.html] (NOTE 1) Obstruction: Obstruction shall be defined as any tactic by a player who attempts to or who restrains an opponent who is not in possession of the puck, or who physically prevents an opponent from moving freely in the direction he wishes to go. The term "obstruction" shall be used coupled with the appropriate foul (holding, hooking, interference, tripping) when the obstruction offence occurs in the neutral zone. [link|http://nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/rule63.html|http://nhl.com/hocke...ebook/rule63.html] Rule 63 Holding an Opponent's Stick A player is not permitted to hold an opponent's stick. A minor penalty shall be assessed to a player who holds an opponent's stick. [link|http://nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/rule64.html|http://nhl.com/hocke...ebook/rule64.html] Hooking is the act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent. yes the sharks suck the big one since all of the above transactions constitute the sharks defence by their NJ devil emulating coach, thanx, bill

But they have an awesome logo. ;)
Every team uses some of those tactics some of the time, I don't see how the Sharks are much different. That's why we have so many penalties gained by different teams.

Edit: And what you need to be aware of, is I don't get to SEE games often, and it's very very difficult to determine play-style simply by listening. I on the rare occasion get to see a Shark game, or a Penguin game, or a Duck game, but for the most part, I am limited to listening on-line, like tonight, because we don't have cable.

Whoo HOO!!! Sharks Won!
Amazing! They shut out Calgary last night! Unbelievable!!!
Too bad I couldn't stay up to listen to it, a) I had a headache and b) it was trying to storm!

P.S. I understand that some people don't like certain teams, but isn't that what Hockey is all about? People pick their favorites and back them, for whatever reasons they are their favorites.

Yeah but you see...
The big problem with successful teams is that other teams can tend to copy them which is why I think the NHL is in such a goal drought that it's in. The NJ Devils successfully proved that defensive all-out play wins Cups. The problem is that an all-defensive game sucks ass. It's boring. Hockey is a fast game. Who wants to see the neutral zone all clogged up resulting in no flow and constant dump-ins? Bleah. Even when the Leafs had their resurrection back in '92-'94, it was great that they were finally winning but Pat Burns had a more defensive system then which made for some boring games.
I'm hoping with the success of Calgary, Tampa and some other more offensive fast teams that the balance will swing back that way.

get the refs to make the calls
the first time NJ is on the ice with just the goalie in the net they might figger it out. I didnt watch hockey for a lot of years then when I moved here and they had a team I tuned in. Saw about 15 callable penalties in the first minute, that kind of hockey sux. thanx, bill

there is a playing style called the trap
which uses all those items all the time, the NJ devils invented it and the sharks emulate them and the league did not crack down on the officials for not calling them. It has ruined the sport. That is why I dont like the sharks. thanx, bill

One good player there
Alyn McCauley is a good guy (good Canadian boy!) and can be quite the player sometimes. Used to be on the Leafs and had a really good run in the playoffs several years ago when most of the Leafs were injured and he was pared with Roberts. Then he was traded at the end of last season for Nolan. Some Leaf fans here still wring their hands about that trade.

Count me in the group of had wringers.
That trade was idiotic.

In hindsight
I didn't mind it so much at the time. I would have not liked to have given up AMac but what's done is done.
Another good guy on the Sharks is Vincent Damphousse. He used to play on the Leafs way back when they sucked badly. It's nice to see him have some success again after the last Montreal Cup.

Yeah, I REALLY like him!
Damphousse is pretty awesome! I like to watch him play!
I hope to get to hear the game this afternoon!

I didn't like it at the time.
I was never very impressed with Nolan and I'm unhappy to say that he has continued to be unimpressive as a Leaf - when he can manage to stay off the injured list, which is almost never, that is.
