Pfc. England said that she was ordered to pose
in the pictures. [link|http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/05/12/prisoner.abuse.england.ap/index.html|Army private 'ordered to pose']
"Pfc. Lynndie England told KCNC-TV in Denver on Tuesday that her superiors gave her specific instructions on how to pose for the photos. Asked who gave the orders, she would say only, "Persons in my chain of command." ... "I was instructed by persons in higher rank to 'stand there, hold this leash, look at the camera,' and they took pictures for PsyOps (psychological operations)," she told the station.
"I didn't really, I mean, want to be in any pictures," she said. She also said she thought "it was kind of weird."
This the so called Nuremberg defense, I was following orders.

Re: Pfc. England said that she was ordered to pose
Whether it is ever proven authoritatively or not I feel sure that the orders came from the top down and these isolated incedents were actually policy

Torture has been high on the right-wing agenda for a long time Do you perhaps want to substantiate this?

Sure
why just this morning I watched a Republican senator proclaim that concern for the Iraqi prisoners was misplaced, that they were evil folks with American blood on their hands and unworthy of sympathy The right-wing crowd has been up in arms for decades about the Warren court's decision in Miranda and other prisoners' rights cases even trying to start impeachment proceedings against Warren They continually complain about 'country club' prisons and get upset if any basic amenities are allowed in prison the right can always be counted on to proclaim that Rodney King or Amadou Diallo got what they deserved the right says that any accused who got off because their rights were violated escaped on a technicality the right believes that police brutality is a myth the right believes that prison rapes and beatings are a legitimate part of the incarceration process the right believes in indefinite detention without being charged for a crime the right believes that the police only arrest the guilty the right believes that appeals and prisoner lawsuits are an abuse of the system
Put it all together and it spells torture

Defense doesn't matter.
"I was just following orders" is not an acceptable line. She should do hard time for her crimes against humanity. So should anybody else involved in this.
Bluke, I hope you take note that I am holding my own country to the same standards I hold Israel, and the rest of the civilized world, and take that into consideration in any future debates.

from the list of approved interrogation techniques:
The interrogation tactics are intended to simulate torture, but officials told the New York Times that they are supposed to stop short of serious injury. Such authorized measures include hooding, roughing up, soaking with water, and depriving prisoners of food, light, and medications.

What would you call the pictures we've seen so far?
And yes, I'm dismissing the "fake" ones that have been spotted - and also pointing out that there are many more pictures which are apparently "much worse" that have only been shown to the members of the highest level of our government.

War crimes. Crimes against humanity.
"I was just following orders" is no defense against those crimes. Auschwitz taught us that.
