New Senate rejects more jobless help

The Senate by a single vote rejected an election-year effort Tuesday to extend federal unemployment benefits.

Democrats tried to attach the benefit to a corporate tax bill. On a 59-40 vote in the GOP-controlled Senate, they fell just shy of the 60 votes needed to overcome objections that extending the benefits would violate last year's budget agreement.

New Propaganda piece
Steve Schmidt, a Bush-Cheney campaign spokesman, said: "Last month, John Kerry was pushing for the extension of unemployment benefits. Today he had the chance to actually vote on that question but was too busy playing politics when he would have made the difference in the Senate."

I really hate when they quote that sort of crap without pointing out that it political puffery. The Republicans carefully allocated the Republican yes votes so it came up one short. If Kerry had been there, they would have had one more more Republican vote no and it still would have come up one short.

New Perhaps not
I received mail from both Bond and Talent (senators, MO) indicating support for the extension. The others on the list of in-favor Republicans are similarly committed.

Back in March, a similar thing happened when the measure was defeated with only 58 votes - Kerry and Edwards absent.

The goal is to introduce an actual bill that will only require a simple majority to pass. The previous attempts have been related to amendments to other bills.

I still think the extension will ultimately pass.
