New Re: it's standard IEEE 802.11
The Artem should work fine with the Linksys wireless access point. I have the Linksys AP(not the router version though) and a Cisco PCM340 PCMCIA card. I got the OS/2 driver for the Cisco at Warpstock. TCP/IP and NETbios work great with this setup, and I believe that both of these usse the Lucent Orinoca chipset.

All 802.11b devices are supposed to be interchangeable, the only issue with the Linksys is it requires windoze to configure it. But I am using the defaults and everything works. Just needed to set the workgroup ID (ESSID) to "linksys" and encryption (WEP) is disabled. The linksys defaults to an IP address of 192.168.1.250. I just connected it to my hub and I could ping it.

I tried a Xircom wireless card and even though it claims to contain a PCM340, it won't work with the OS/2 driver. The Cisco PCM340 worked first time I tried it.

Good luck with the Artem.

New Hey Mark. Good to see you here. Welcome! :-)
We've not met, but I've enjoyed all the on-line work you've done over the years helping OS/2 users.

Welcome!

Cheers,
Scott.

Thanks Scott. I'll try to stop by regularly but I already spend way too much time in Usenet and on multiple mail lists.

New Howdy Mark! Got a question.
Where are these mythical drivers? The only model with a 340 number that was a wireless PCMCIA modem on Cisco's site didn't list any OS/2 drivers whatsoever...

New Re: Howdy Mark! Got a question.
My understanding is that this driver was written by IBM, not Cisco. I got it from Oliver Stein at Warpstock. If you want the driver just sendme an email and I can send it to you, or go to [link|http://whois.ibm.com|http://whois.ibm.com] and look up the email address for Oliver Stein(there is only one AFAIK) and ask him for it. I knew about the Artem OS/2 driver, but wasn't aware you could directly order their hardware outside of Europe. I've sent them several emails, and they never told me that. I was told they were looking for a US distributor.

I've been trying to get someone to write a review article of the Artem wireless for the VOICE Newsletter for almost 9 months now. Be aware that the Artem PCI card doesn't work with OS/2, just the PCMCIA and ISA. To use it in a PCI slot you would need to find a PCI PCMCIA adapter that works with OS/2's drivers. If anyone has one of these working under OS/2 and it is still available for purchase somewhere, I'd like to hear about it.

I found the Cisco 340 PCMCIA card on eBay for $105+$15 Shipping. But it has "No warranty Included" stamped all over the manuals that came with it. Only drivers for NT/95/ME/2000 on the included CDs. I think new Cisco cards cost as much or more then the Artem, so if I were buying new I'd go with Artem, since they actually support OS/2. I have no idea if the Cisco PCI or ISA cards will work with OS/2. Like the Artem, I think these are just adapter cards for the PCMCIA cards.

There is a utility on the Cisco CD that probably tells you statistics about your wireless connection, but it's a stupid 16bit windoze installer, so I can't get it to install under Odin. I don't know if the Artem includes a similar utility that works under OS/2.

New I'll write one, once I get it working

The NIC works fine under Windows with my [link|http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=173&grid=19|Linksys Cable Modem Router]. The setup isn't as polished as the D-Link I was using before, but then again the D-Link doesn't have OS/2 drivers and we know which is more important :-)

I don't yet have PCMCIA support working under OS/2 on my i1452. It uses an O2 Micro OZ 6832/6833 controller. I'm not sure how much time I'll spend on the i1452 as I've ordered a T22 to replace it, however my dad might like PCMCIA support working on it when he gets my old laptop.

That would be great. I'm working on an article on my Cisco now. I'm not sure though how publically available IBM wants the Cisco drivers.

New It's working, but still fighting the Windows problem
I use windows for dial-up work support, so I need to get the Windows/DOS not booting problem solved before I give my dad my old laptop.

I'm hoping I'll be able to fix the problem this weekend with the help I've received from IWETHEY members.

New I take that back
The setup[for windows] isn't as polished as the D-Link I was using before

In the "control panel" I found the ComCard settings which let you have up to 4 preset configurations - very nice for switching between work, home and friend's wireless networks. The D-Link software didn't have this feature.

Also found a TOOLS directory on the Driver CD. This is installed seperately from the driver. It has a nice signal strength monitor and diagnostic program that I was missing from the D-Link. It also adds a small signal monitor to the start bar over by the clock.
