Sun settles with MS for $2bn
[link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/53/36770.html|http://www.theregist...ent/53/36770.html] Sun Microsystems and Microsoft are to stop sueing each other for ten years, in a settlement which will see Sun trouser almost $2bn.
The bitter rivals have signed a technology collaboration pact to get their products to work better together; and they have settled all outstanding litigation. They have also come to terms on patents and "other issues".
Regards,

So much for the entertainment value
of McNeally's keynotes. All his jokes were at MS expense.
I'd bet that a cease and desist on that front is part of the deal.
Java is a joke, only it's not funny.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Both of these turkeys (Microsoft and Sun) have been giving money to SCO. They both see their futures threatened by Linux.
The two "making nice" is not a good thing.

The enemy of my enemy . . .
. . is my enemy's enemy, nothing more.
I doubt Sun and Microsoft will trust each other half as far as they can throw each other.

The scary part
is if Sun and Microsoft share technologies and do what they can to knock out Linux. Like Sun creating StarOffice with features found from MSOffice for Solaris only, and no Linux port.
Also both teaming up with SCO to battle Linux would not be a good thing either.

But, it's good to see some Sun guys have principles.
From the Register: The first major fallout from Sun's capitulation to Microsoft has occurred with vice president and [link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/36780.html|Java defender Rich Green quitting Sun] in "disgust," The Register has confirmed.
Green, Sun's vice president of developer platforms and the major public voice for Java, left the company on the same day that Sun announced it had declined to pursue lawsuits against Microsoft, according to sources. During the US Microsoft antitrust trial, Green was one of Sun's key witnesses, arguing that Microsoft tried to undermine Java by shipping an incompatible version of the JVM (Java Virtual Machine).
