New The state of democracy in the Arab world
[link|http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1080448248297|A glance at the state of democracy in the Arab world]

In a word, nonexistent.
New Given that Israel is a theocracy, there are no
democracies in the region. Or do democracies make a practice of paying all rabbis' salaries?

New does the US gov pay rabbi's salaries?
different branches of government pay their chaplains of whatever branch a salary. Israel isnt a theocracy any more that Iran is. Is mexico a democracy? Priests are govt servants there. Israel is a Jewish state and wishes to remain so. Only the Rabbi's and You think it is a theocracy :-)

New Iran is a theocracy.
Chaplains for armed forces don't bother me.

If all priests in Mexico are paid by the government then it's a theocracy.

Rabbis are what they have in Israel, otherwise not different from mullahs, priests, ministers, parasites. :)

New Iran is a theocracy because the mullahs make the rules
In Israel the Rabbis do not make the rules Parliament does and Parliament is fully sovereign and can decide to do what it wants. Parliament could decide tomorrow to abolish the Chief Rabbinate and while people might protest it would happen. The fact that Parliament vests some power in the religious authorities doees not make it a theocracy.
New If I get it right,
in Israel you pick your religion, and it manages such things as marriage and birth certificates for you. The religion does not have to be Judaism. I do not know how do atheists deal with this system, nor do I know what happens with interreligious mariages.

Can bluke clarify?

New That is basically how it works
I don't know all the details.
New Israel is not a theocracy
Last I checked the Church of England was the official Church of England, does that make England a theocracy? Just because the government sponsors and pays for religious activities does not make it a theocracy.

Israel has free and fair elections, parliament makes all the laws (and there are no clerics who can prevent people from running, veto laws, or anything like that) and has an independent judiciary. What more is required from a democracy?

In fact, the proportional representation system in Israel is much more democratic then the US winner take all system with gerrymandered districts. How many House districts are competitive in the US? Less then 10%. How many parties are there with members in Congress? 2 What are the chances for 3rd party candidates? Almost none. In the US there are elections (which may be stolen by electronic voting machines) between 2 parties with little difference between them. If you ask me Israel is more democratic then the US.
New The US is a republic and it has its flaws.
Israeli's [link|http://www.hrw.org/reports/2001/israel2/|SECOND CLASS] citizens. Note the picture. Anything like the school your kids go to? Something to be proud of?

Shame!

Don't tell me Israel is a democracy.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Jewish and Arab children always have attended separate schools in Israel. Except for a handful of integrated schools, and except for a marginal number of Arabs who attend Jewish schools, the two communities are segregated in education.

In contrast to the United States, where public pressure was a driving force behind school integration, neither Jews nor Arabs in Israel ever pushed to merge the separate school systems, which are divided by language, culture and curriculum.

On the contrary, Arab citizens would like to make their school system, now closely controlled by the government, into the core of a "cultural autonomy" for Israeli Arabs. They want a separate administration of Arab education, which would have absolute autonomy over management and curriculum.

This, they feel, would allow them to instill a Palestinian national consciousness in the young generation to an extent that is impossible as long as the Israeli government still has control.

In other words, what you call "theocracy", Arabs call "cultural autonomy"

New "Separate but equal" has never worked anywhere.
Especially when "some are more equal than others".

Do you think per student funding has been equal?

These are the seeds of Israel's eventual destruction.

New "Separate but equal" would never have ended
here, either, if black folks insisted on "cultural autonomy".

New "Cultural autonomy" should be had on the side in
private, not in public school. Arabs teaching Jews and Jews teaching Arabs in schools would be a good thing. Plus, you need that common language for all citizens we talked about elsewhere.

The Israeli Arabs have been stupid in that regard.

New Re: The US is a republic and it has its flaws.
I guarantee you that I can find pictures just as bad in some inner city schools in teh US. Nobody is perfect.
New is it a republic?
The picture I saw resembles rolling green elementary in Boynton Beach Florida that my kids attended for a few semesters. There is places in Clearwater florida that make many parts of the west bank seem really nice, Oh yeah, I guarranty in Charlotte you will find liveng conditions similar to ramallah, just not in your part of town :-)
thanx,
bill

New For what it's worth,...
when we moved to Charlotte, my youngest was in elementary school and was bussed across town (~45 minute ride each way) to a predominantly black area school and kids from that area were bussed to the general area I live in. *All* schools, no matter where located in the county, have approximately the same proportion of minority students.

New define minority, you mean a minority based of local color?
If that is the case you are correct, locally there is a small minority of whites attending largely black schools and vice versa.

bill
