Excerpt:
UN staff have been pulled out of the northern part of the flashpoint town of Mitrovica in Kosovo where two days of inter-ethnic clashes have left 31 dead.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said the decision had been taken in view of worsening security in the Serb-controlled areas.
He was addressing a special session of the UN Security Council after the worst violence since the 1999 Kosovo war.
Mobs of angry Albanians set alight Serbian Orthodox churches on Thursday.
The attacks came as Nato announced it was sending another 1,000 troops to reinforce the 18,500 already there.
The Security Council has strongly condemned the violence - calling it "unacceptable" - and demanded that it stop immediately.
I say:
"Stop it immediately, I say! Stop it or else! I'll... I'll... just stop it!"
No quagmire here. Nope. Good old UN multilateralism and restraint have got this all sewn up. Clintonian schmoozing and European nuance are all we need. If only Dubya would just acknowledge that and quit rocking the boat. Why, if we give that reckless lunatic another term, he might actually go barging into Kosovo just as the International Community(TM) has the whole situation under control.
Or maybe someone should tell these people you don't win a war by quitting the battlefield.
Guess NATO's not completely obsolete just yet. This is supposed to be the UN's job. But, somebody has to do it. With fewer than 20K troops. No idea if their armor is up to date. That's half-assed. But the UN effort was one-quarter-assed.
