It's a great place to be from.
"Riots, fires and mudslides. They got Sushi in the mall. Water bars and brontosaurs and Chinese modern lust. Shake and bake life with the quake, the secret's in the crust."
You know who said it. ;-)

It's just.. that -
Considering "Calif" is an 'economy' > France's (for only one factoid) - I still find it idiotic to try to speak of "Californians are ___". Remember The Murican Peepul think/act/want/do ___ ??
(And yes, guilty as charged for the occasional F&^#%^@ Texans remarks, which should always be prepended, *Some* F&^$##$ Texans ___)

Idiocy of "Californians are ____"
Agree completely. My view is that the average Murican thinks of California as a combination of the most outrageous parts of the valley (perhaps SF?) coupled with the gangs of South Central L.A.
I grew up there, remember? That entitles me, imnsho, to criticize it ;0)
It's idiotic to say "Californians are..." anything because the diversity there - in the LA basin alone, for instance - is far too great! Add in Northern California (which always wanted SoCal to be a separate state anyway) and there is no way to create a "typical Californian".
Still, they do whacked out things collectively - like elect Arnold Gropenfuherer as a recent example. ;0)
I'm glad I grew up in Southern California, but I would not move back there on a bet. If I could pick a place to live and I had to stay on the North American continent, I'd most likely pick Vancouver.
BTW, what is it with you and defense of California? Are you living there now? I thought you were somewhere near Atlanta? Or was that Addison? I remember I wrongly assumed you were from England at one point, years ago...Which is another thing that is amazing, isn't it? Some of us have been bantering back and forth for years!

California is the breakfast cereal state
The land of fruits, nuts and flakes. ;-)
I lived there for 6 years (Lancaster-Palmdale area), and I wouldn't move back if my life depended on it.

North California
(The split-off State long suggested. But that's as unlikely as our getting rid of Dixie, finally.. in the larger scheme. Making both Dixians and Yankees prolly a lot happier?) I'm ~ 50 mi. N. of Frisco, and I rarely hear a car engine (except my own). I like that. A lot. Before that, Berkeley and environs for a lot of years. Berkeley hills - one of the Great cityscapes extant; 3 bridges in view - one of them Beautiful.
Besides, CA Valley Guhl speech.. I see coming out of the mouths of ingenues of all cup-sizes lately. Females in their '30s sounding high-pitched like 12 yos.. all unaware of what a well modulated speaking voice does for the pheromones. Fools. Never saw a Bacall flic, I guess..
Having spent formative years both N and S, I'd ~ go along with your take on the So Cal meltingshredding pot - for a first approximation. Mainly though; that place is about the 'free'way way of existence, as its infrastructure continues to crumble. Birth place of The Strip Mall :(
Still and all, I suspect there are about the same (tiny) % of admirable folk in most places (States) -- all drowned out by the execrable mob-mind which gets all the FOXy news coverage, and reveals certain local peculiarities which we focus on. Is it fair to blame MO for the fact that Ashcroft imagined he might even rule there? Nahhh.. they had sense enough to vote in a dead man over this walking corpse! A natural selection for the neoconmen: it was DC or the cemetery -?- he chose the living dead.
Por moi - I'll gladly take the mixture here, over any US place I've dropped in on.. at least until the final shredding of the Constitution occurs; then they will all suck / oppressive atmospheres - you just can't stop breathing in, y'know?

dont like Compton wannabee's, Love Grass valley and chinatown, LA leaves me unmoved but east of the windfarm is nice, the entire 395 east of the nevada's is a favorite playground but San Jose is fucked because of the congestion. Sacremento is okay and fresno is fine, the only problem is the place is dam crowded and I cant smoke inside a bar except for a few in the oakland alameda area, thanx, bill

Big Bear skiing is great too.
I used to go up there damned near every week-end in the winter. Pick-up hockey games were bloody and great as well.
