The Gates Foundation
Didn't BG have a foundation that was giving away computer systems and Microsoft software to schools and libraries? If so, they just undid everything with the Piracy Patrol on public schools.
The Gates giveth and taketh away. :)
Either dump Windows and MS-Office for Linux and StarOffice or change everyone over to Macs running ClarisWorks or something. ;)

ClarisWorks appears to be a teacher favorite.
One of my neighbors is a 8th grade teacher and she bought a used laptop because it ran ClarisWorks. She has fought with Administration over their lack of standards and the amount of forms that have to be completed with pencil and paper. Of course, she's always complaining about the administration, the students or the parents. She's a teacher in a society that places little value in the teaching profession. What a shame.

Brett - did you read Ben's links re John Gatto ?? link fixed
~ "Education VS Schooling" ?
IF Mr. Gatto has it Right (and, I believe he has it Righter than any essay I can recall reading in the past 20 years or so..)
The root-cause is of such a magnitude that - the Usual Suspects\ufffd simply pale into insignificance.
I find Mr. G's essay to be so er seminal - that there isn't even any point to following the usual - religio- politico- $ico- "debates" about What Went Wrong in Murican ed -ja - Cay - shun as our Presidential puppett puts it. No point at all. Just link the combatants to:
[link|http://www.cantrip.org/gatto.html|[link|http://www.cantrip.org/gatto.html|http://www.cantrip.org/gatto.html]]
and especially:

Seems to have an extra ["] at end, try:
[link|http://www.cantrip.org/gatto.html|http://www.cantrip.org/gatto.html]
Either I double-typed the ["] - too lazy to look it up in source or.. it's Scott's HTML parser gone awry !!
Yeah.. let's blame Scott! (Who has on list already - an EZ nO-ShifTinG lInK maker!)

How Apple Is Reclaiming the Classroom
Apparently educators agree with you.
[link|http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/jul2001/nf20010711_074.htm| BYTE OF THE APPLE]
By Charles Haddad
How Apple Is Reclaiming the Classroom
Jobs & Co. is again No. 1 in education, thanks to a series of smart moves, starting with its new AirPort wireless network
In less than a school year, Apple has clawed its way back to the top of the bell tower in the all-important education market. In public schools nationwide, it has dethroned reigning champion Dell Computer by a margin of greater than two to one, according to the very reputable Quality Education Data, longtime number-cruncher and school consultant. .... How did Apple so quickly best a fierce competitor that wields price cuts like a saber? Jobs & Co. can't afford to respond in kind, so it counterattacked by offering schools a compelling idea: Let us build a wireless network of portable computers that when tapped into the Internet, will not only make teaching more powerful but will delight children as well. This network lets students post homework online and administrators automate everything from progress reports to attendance records.
