Cyanide is also extremely common
There were jars and jars of the stuff in the chemical cupboard when I was doing my A-levels. It's extremely commonly used in many organic reactions.
Yes, it's toxic. But then, lots of things are toxic.
From [link|http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts8.html|http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts8.html] :
Cyanide and hydrogen cyanide are used in electroplating, metallurgy, production of chemicals, photographic development, making plastics, fumigating ships, and some mining processes.
As I said, a very common reactant.
This article makes the point that it's common stuff, though toxic:

And which of these was al Zarqawi intending to use it for?
I betcha you have a block of cyanide in your own home workshop, just standing by in case you need to do any electroplating. Yeah. Most innocent thing in the world.
Oh, wait. You don't? Uh-oh.
"Honey, we're out of cyanide, and I've got to fumigate the ship! Could you run down to the convenience store and pick up a box?"

You're missing the point
It's extremely difficult to weaponise. It disperses too quickly. See what Todd said about WW1.

So what's he using it for then?
Do try to be plausible this time.
Remember, cyanide is used to make a number of chemical weapons, such as tabun and Zyklon-B. No, Todd, it wasn't obsolete after WWI.
Oh, and didn't Iraq use cyanide gas against the Kurds in 1988? Evidently rapid dispersal didn't help the victims very much. Probably the ease of manufacture made up for that. But never mind. I know mass murder doesn't move you at all. You have to be human to have pity.

Try and focus...
One man acquiring 7 pounds of industrial reagent, is not a WMD program, much less a national threat. The people captured with RPG launchers were potentially more dangerous.

Multiply by X, where X is the difficulty of finding such....
hidden caches, and you will have the true quantity.
Focus yourself. You can't reach any democratic country (yet) from Iraq with an RPG.

Sorry.
The "well, they must have more buried somewhere" bit has been done to death. Also, you can go anywhere they mine gold or silver and get sodium cyanide in serious quantities, not some crappy cyanide salts that will require processing to make a serious weapon. There are a lot of other places to get varous types of cyanide. This is not indicative of a weapons program. If the guy makes a lot of ceramics it may not even indicate an insurgent, though I wouldn't bet on it.
Since nobody's going to waste a long range missle for a cyanide gas payload, the guy with the RPG is still more dangerous.

One equation, more than one unknown....
You do the math.
(You can solve it, can't you?...)
jb4 shrub\ufffdbish (Am., from shrub + rubbish, after the derisive name for America's 43 president; 2003) n. 1. a form of nonsensical political doubletalk wherein the speaker attempts to defend the indefensible by lying, obfuscation, or otherwise misstating that facts; GIBBERISH. 2. any of a collection of utterances from America's putative 43rd president. cf. <Mocking...> I said BE REASONABLE!
There can be only one use for this block of Cyanide, they planned on giving it to Al Qaeda to kill innocent Americans!
The link with Al Qaeada is obvious. Abu Musab Zarqawi was last seen groping the 3rd wife's last cousin, first's child's, 2nd-to-last uncle's, housecleaner of Bin Laden. A mere 5 degrees of seperation, far less than Kevin Bacon!
Al Qaeda is rumored to hatch a devious plot to kill innocent Americans with Cyanide!. Their agents plan on climbing to the top of the Empire State Building with several bottles of C2H6O. Their diabolical plan? Toss the block of Cyanide off the top of the building...allowing it to fall and hit a pedestrian. Then, before the police can catch them, they plan on consuming the bottles of C2H60!

Idiot - cyanide is used to make hundreds of things
..from road salt to film to metal fabrication to ore extraction to paint to insecticide. Zyklon-B itself was a fumigating pesticide pressed into alternate use by people just like you.

Yeah! Scorpions just love to chow down on cyanide salts!
No need to mix it in with anything to make bait. The pure cyandide salt *is* the bait! `Coz Iraqi scorpions just love the taste of cyanide salt. It's like candy to them. That's why they sell it pure. And they sell it in seven pound blocks because those scorpions are huge!
Hey, if Godzilla fought an Iraqi cyanide-eating scorpion, who would win?
And if I've got a coupon for a dollar off a seven-pound block of cyanide salt, can I use it at Quizno's?
