You can stick your nose in an LCD without any blurring or flicker being noticable. Getting close to a CRT produces weird optical effects from screen painting no matter how fast the vertical refresh. Probably also invovled is the visible bulk of the CRT housing. My A31 1400x1050 display looked like a 25in TV. -drl
