Searching for websites that do monitor reviews
Turned on my PC this morning, and the 8 year old 17" Gateway Vivitron made a funny kind of noise, and now all of the text appears to be "shadowed" in the background across the top of the letters. Guess the electronics are finally giving up after so many years of excellent service. Need a replacement and would appreciate any opinions of makes/manufacturers.

Be tempted by an LCD.
I've recently acquired one, and I'm never looking back.
When shopping for an LCD, be aware that in use they seem bigger than they really are. So my 18" feels to me like a 21" CRT.

Interesting - that's the "back off" effect. You can stick your nose in an LCD without any blurring or flicker being noticable. Getting close to a CRT produces weird optical effects from screen painting no matter how fast the vertical refresh.
Probably also invovled is the visible bulk of the CRT housing. My A31 1400x1050 display looked like a 25in TV.

My screen has a 1" bezel all around and is about 8" deep.

More than that...
My 19" LCD has 19" viewable. My 21" CRT has about 19.75" viewable.
There's more truth in advertising regarding LCD screen sizes.

an LCD doesn't have to be square. I have a [link|http://www.apple.com/imac/|widescreen iMac]; I wouldn't go back to a square screen. But then [link|http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/CatalogueItem_4513.html|bigger] is always better...

Not square in that sense
Square inasmuch as you don't have to spend 20 minutes dicking with the geometry settings; 90 degree angles are 90 degree out of the box. I didn't mean that the screen itself is square :)

The pixels are square!
Same number per inch (or cm. if you prefer :) ) in both vertical and horizontal direction.

Suspicious of life expectancies
I've been using laptops mostly for the last 4 years. I've had 3 of them. I notice that, when new they are bright and crisp and white, but after about a year of heavy use, the picture starts to fade and yellow a bit. Which makes me think the longevity of the flat panel display technology isn't so hot. Its OK on a laptop, you need to upagrade by the time the screen gets weak anyhow, but desktop monitors should last a lot longer.
This is the principle reason I haven't splurged for an Apple Cinema - I'd like to see one thats been in service for 3 years and compare it to a new one to see how it looks.

my sibling works for a giant company that makes these
they will not allow them to be purchased for in house use as the life expectancy is too short. They should know.

I think that's the bulb. I imagine dust also collects on the bulb dimming it further and providing the yellow tinge. The LCD pixels themselves should be immortal.

That was the vertical sync circuitry gaining a new SED (smoke emitting diode).
pcworld.com is my reference.
Peter's right of course, but if you're used to an old CRT you'll be astounded at the improvement in quality of CRTs. Trintron CRTs can now easily do a vertical refresh of 100Hz at 1280x1024, with razor sharp convergence.
IBM's 17in Trinitron CRT is only about 250 bucks.

Some thoughts.
I'd pick the specifications I want before searching for monitors. I assume your 17" did 1024x768 or 1280x1024. You want at least 75 Hz to minimize eyestrain if you're sticking with a CRT. If you want something similar, then you should be able to find a good one for a very low price - certainly less than $150. Some (of unknown quality) are under $100.
With the specs in mind, check out [link|http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=19&DEPA=1&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycodevalue=3792|newegg]'s selection of 17" boxes. Many have reviews there. As with any review, you have to take things with a grain of salt, but it gives you an idea of how happy people are with them and what brands people like and why.
If you find a box that looks reasonable, go to the manufacturer's website. They often have pointers to reviews longer and more detailed reviews and comparisons.
Since the price for shipping of a monitor can be quite high, try to buy locally if you can. It'll also give you an opportunity to see what it looks like (but usually you can't change the resolution in the demos...).
